  • Trip introduction

    This epic road trip to Spiti Valley takes you deep into the desolate, gorgeous landscape of the Indian Himalayas that offer a rare and beautiful combination of Indo-Tibetan culture. You will visit the ancient monasteries of Key, Dhankar and Tabo, where the cool air is scented with incense and the walls are decorated with Buddhist art. You will drive up to 15,000 feet to visit Komik, one of Asia's highest inhabited villages, and send a postcard from Hikkim, the highest post-office in the world. Visit the small, discreet village of Gue and take a look at the only “mummy“ found and preserved in India.

    During the trip, you will stay with local families in home stays and guest houses at the quaint villages of Nako, Langza, Sarahan and Kalpa. You will also spend a night camping besides the famed Chandratal Lake. On this road trip to Spiti Valley, travel along winding roads of snow-capped mountains and revel in the charm and majestic beauty of the stark Himalayan landscape.

    Please note that a minimum of 6 travellers are required to book this trip. If you don’t have a group of 6 travellers, you can join a fixed departure on Wed, 15-Aug-2018.

    Health conditions

    A reasonable level of health and fitness is required to book the 12-Day Journey to Spiti Valley. Please do not book this trip if you are pregnant or suffer from any chronic medical conditions. If you have any cardiac or respiratory conditions, or suffer from knee or spinal problems, please consult your doctor before booking this trip.

    Rules on the trip

    Travellers are required to adhere to the instructions of the tour guide during the road trip to Spiti Valley.

    Travellers are requested to treat the local culture with respect and avoid littering, defacing property and monuments and causing general disturbance.

    Consumption of liquor, drugs, tobacco products and cigarettes is strictly prohibited during the road trip to Spiti Valley.

    Cancellation policy

    For cancellations made 21 days or more before departure of the Spiti Valley road trip: 90% refund.

    For cancellations made 15-21 days before departure of the Spiti Valley road trip: 75% refund.

    For cancellations made 8-14 days before departure of the Spiti Valley road trip: 50% refund.

    For cancellations made less than 8 days before departure of the Spiti Valley road trip: No refund.

    All refunds will be processed after deducting any transaction charges.

    Additional instructions, booking policies, terms and conditions

    During this road trip to Spiti Valley, travellers will visit destinations at altitudes from 9,000 ft to 14,500 ft and may experience altitude sickness.

    Spiti Valley is located at an altitude with no internet connectivity and limited road access/availability of services. Travellers are advised to take such circumstances under consideration before booking the trip.

    The tour operator takes utmost care to ensure safety of the travellers and shall not be held responsible for any mishap, accident or loss of life during the trip.

    The tour operator reserves the right to change or cancel the itinerary of this trip due to bad weather conditions or other unforeseen circumstances to ensure maximum safety of travellers and staff.

  • Day 1 of the road trip to Spiti Valley: Depart from Delhi

    Arrive at New Delhi or Chandigarh by 17:00 hrs and board a state transport bus to Rampur. If you board the bus from New Delhi, the bus will pass through the towns of Panipat, Kurukshetra, Chandigarh and Shimla before reaching Rampur. Overnight in transit.

    Day 2 of the road trip to Spiti Valley: Reach Rampur

    After arriving in Rampur by early morning, you'll check into a guesthouse and spend the rest of the day at leisure. You can explore the small town of Rampur and visit the local marketplace to do any last minute shopping. You can taste the local cuisine at restaurants in Rampur and visit the Sutlej River that flows through the town. Overnight at Rampur in guesthouse.

    Day 3 of the road trip to Spiti Valley: Rampur to Sangla

    Wake up early morning and leave for Sangla via Innova or similar vehicle. En route, you'll stop at Sarahan, site of a one of a kind temple, and continue travelling on scenic mountain roads flanked by dense forests to reach Sangla. After arriving at Sangla, you'll check into a guesthouse and spend the rest of the day at leisure. You can take a walk around the hill station to admire its natural beauty or interact with locals at the guesthouse. Overnight at Sangla in guesthouse.

    Day 4 of the road trip to Spiti Valley: Sangla to Chitkul via Rakcham

    Today's journey will take you to Chitkul, the last village on the Indo-Tibetan border. En route, you'll stop at Rakcham, known as the 'village of the mountain nomads', and spend some time walking around the quaint village or dip your feet into the cool waters of the Baspa River that runs through the village. You'll arrive at Chitkul by evening. Overnight at Chitkul in guesthouse or home stay.

    Day 5 of the road trip to Spiti Valley: Chitkul to Tabo via Nako, Gue

    Wake up early and begin travelling towards Tabo. En route your journey will take you to Nako, the last village in the Kinnaur District. Spot the traditional houses of Nako built with stacked stones and visit Nako's holy lake. After lunch, you will proceed to Gue to take a look at the only 'mummy' found and preserved in India. Continue your journey and reach Tabo to visit the 1,000 year old, second oldest monastery in the world. Overnight at Tabo in monastery guesthouse.

    Day 6 of the road trip to Spiti Valley: Tabo to Dhankar

    Wake up early and visit the Sandalwood monastery at Tabo. After this, drive to Dhankar to reach by afternoon. Check into the monastery guesthouse at Dhankar and spend some time exploring the monastery which was once an old Mongolian prison. After lunch, embark on a short hike up to the Dhankar Lake. Here, you can spend some time absorbing its pristine natural beauty of the Indian Himalayas. Return back to your guesthouse by night to witness a twinkling sky that often sees instances of magical shooting stars. Overnight at Dhankar in monastery guesthouse.

    Day 7 of the road trip to Spiti Valley: Dhankar to Langza via Demul, Komik, Hikkim

    Today's journey will take you to Langza. En route, visit Demul, the artistic handicraft village of Spiti, where you can spend some time shopping for souvenirs. Continue the drive and travel to Komik, the highest village with a motorable road in the world. After making a pit stop at Hikkim, where you can send a post card from the world's highest post office, you will reach Langza. At Langza, you can try your hand at spotting tiny pieces of fossils that are often found all over the village. Overnight at Langza in home stay.

    Day 8 of the road trip to Spiti Valley: Langza to Kaza via Key

    Today you will travel to Kaza, district headquarters of the Spiti Valley. En route, you will visit the Key Gompa, a hilltop monastery that is one of the most revered Buddhist houses of worship in Himachal Pradesh. From here, you will then proceed to Kaza. Reach Kaza by evening and visit the Himalayan antique stores and cafes. Overnight at Kaza in guesthouse or home stay.

    Day 9 of the road trip to Spiti Valley: Kaza to Chandratal lake

    Wake up as early as 04:00 hrs and leave for Chandratal Lake, a moon-shaped, high-altitude lake that is only open to travellers during the months of summer. En route, you will drive through Kunzum Pass and reach the Chandratal Lake by early evening. Spend the rest of the day on the banks of the lake admiring its breathtaking beauty. Overnight at Chandratal Lake in tents.

    Day 10 of the road trip to Spiti Valley: Chandratal lake to Manali

    Get an early start on the day and drive down to Manali via the Rohtang Pass. By evening, you will reach Manali where you will check into a guesthouse at Old Manali. Visit the local marketplace and discover Manali's streets and cafes. Overnight at Manali in guesthouse.

    Day 11 of the road trip to Spiti Valley: Depart from Manali

    Take a day off and spend the day at the guesthouse or around Manali at leisure. Alternatively, you can also head to the Beas River for a session of rafting at an additional cost. In the evening, check out of the guesthouse and board a state transport bus back to New Delhi. Overnight in transit.

    Day 12 of the road trip to Spiti Valley: Reach Delhi

    You will reach New Delhi Kashmiri Gate or Chandigarh by morning. Your trip ends here.

    You will board a state transport bus from Delhi at 17:00 hrs to reach Rampur. You will spend the night in the bus. Make sure to buy some dry snacks at Delhi to munch on during the journey. Since no meals are included throughout the trip, make sure to eat before the bus journey and get packed eatables in case you get hungry during the ride.

    Day 2 of the road trip to Spiti Valley: Reach Rampur

    Spend the night at Rampur in a comfortable guesthouse on triple/multi-sharing basis. No meals are included throughout the trip, but you will stop at local restaurants and eateries to have meals at additional cost.
