    A trek that often ranks in lists of difficult treks in India, the Rupin Pass trek certainly compensates with spectacular views of the Kinnaur Kailash mountains and the Sangla valley. For 8 days in the Himalayan wilderness, you'll hike under dark and dusky forests, climb tricky intersections over rocky mountain trails, make your way across sprawling acres of snow and camp under the stars on peaceful nights. Beginning from the hillside village of Sankri, this high-altitude trek will take you alongside the Rupin river and across the Rupin pass to conclude in the town of Sangla.

    NOTE: A minimum of 6 travellers are required to book this trek to Rupin Pass.

    Destination

    Rupin Pass is a high-altitude, mountain pass located at an altitude of 15,250 feet in the Dhauladhar range. The pass, as well as the route to access the pass, is often layered with thick snow, especially in the months of winter, requiring the use of ice axes. The trek to Rupin Pass, one of the celebrated adventures in the Indian trekking community, takes travellers from Uttarakhand to Himachal Pradesh.

    Rules on the trip

    Travellers are required to adhere to instructions of the trek leader during the trek to Rupin Pass.

    Travellers are requested to treat the local culture with respect and avoid littering, defacing property and monuments and causing general disturbance.

    Consumption of alcohol and drugs is strictly prohibited during the trek to Rupin Pass. Consumption of tobacco products and cigarettes is not recommended either.

    Cancellation policy

    For cancellations made 31 days or more before departure of the Rupin Pass trek: 90% refund.

    For cancellations made 16-30 days before departure of the Rupin Pass trek: 50% refund.

    For cancellations made less than 16 days before departure of the Rupin Pass trek: No refund.

    In case of no show: no refund.

    All refunds will be processed after deducting any transaction charges.

    Additional instructions, booking policies, terms and conditions

    This trek to Rupin Pass takes travellers to destinations at altitudes from 11,000 ft to 15,000 ft, with no cellular connectivity and limited access to basic services. Travellers are requested to take such conditions into consideration before booking the trek.

    Due to unpredictable or unsuitable weather, the trek leader may decide to skip Day 4 and trek from Jhaka to Dhanteras Thatch directly, depending on the fitness ability of the travellers. This may be done to allow for a buffer day at the end.

    Travellers will be required to bear any additional costs arising due to unforeseen circumstances such as bad weather, road blocks etc.

    The tour operator reserves the right to cancel or alter the itinerary of the trek to Rupin Pass to maximize the safety of travellers as well as staff.

    Day 2 of the Rupin Pass trek: Sankri to Gosangu

    Take a jeep or similar vehicle and travel to Dhaula, located 1-hr drive away. From Dhaula, you'll begin the trek towards Gosangu, following a path alongside the Rupin river. The path leads you over small, wooden bridges and sections of steep inclines. En route, you'll stop to rest at the Sewa Temple. Just before arriving at your destination for the night, you'll cross state borders and enter Himachal Pradesh. Overnight in tents at Gosangu.

    Day 3 of the Rupin Pass trek: Gosangu to Jhaka

    Continue trekking on the village trail alongside the Rupin river. The route, paved with rocks, takes you over flat terrain with only occasional inclines. However, as you approach Jhaka, the trail takes a sharp and steep climb. Jhaka is the last town with fairly decent availability of services on the trek to Rupin Pass. Overnight in tents or home-stay at Jhaka.

    Day 4 of the Rupin Pass trek: Jhaka to Saruwas Thatch

    Exit Jhaka and continue deeper into the mountains. You'll encounter steeper and harder inclines on the trail, as you continue to gain altitude. You'll be surrounded by towering pine trees, decorated by sprawling acres of rhododendron trees. Making your way past the campsite of Buras Kandi, you'll approach Saruwas Thatch, located in the middle of barren hillsides and rocky mountain cliffs. Overnight in tents at Saruwas Thatch.

    Day 5 of the Rupin Pass trek: Saruwas Thatch to Dhanteras Thatch

    Arguably the most scenic day of the trip, today you'll trek to Dhanteras Thatch over a relatively easy trail, punctuated with brief patches of uphill hiking. The trail with also lead you over a few sections of snow. The terrain around you begins to gradually change from forest covered valleys to boulder-strewn mountain slopes. A small waterfall in the course of the Rupin river marks your arrival at Dhanteras Thatch. Overnight in tents at Dhanteras Thatch.

    Due to unpredictable or unsuitable weather, the trek leader may decide to trek from Jhaka to Dhanteras Thatch directly, depending on the fitness ability of the travellers. This may be done to allow for a buffer day at the end.

    Day 6 of the Rupin Pass trek: Dhanteras Thatch to Rathi Pheri

    Trekking across a largely flat meadow, you'll reach closer to the Rupin waterfall. You'll climb to the height of the waterfall over tricky sections of the trail, often swamped with snow during the months of May and June. From here, you can catch stunning views of the Rupin valley. Continue trekking ahead over a moderately difficult trail until you reach Rathi Pheri. Overnight in tents at Rathi Pheri.

    Day 7 of the Rupin Pass trek: Rathi Pheri to Ronti Gad

    After five days of trekking, you'll finally cross the Rupin pass today. A short hike from Rathi Pheri later, you'll spot the Rupin gully which involves a steep and difficult climb through snow-covered terrain. From the Rupin pass, you can get spectacular views of the Kinnaur Kailash peaks and the Sangla valley. You'll halt to spend some time in the snowy paradise and perform a traditional ritual to mark your safe ascent of the Rupin pass. The descent from Rupin pass is just as steep as the incline. To arrive at Ronti Gad, you'll undertake a long and rewarding walk across snow fields and open meadows. Overnight in tents at Ronti Gad.

    Day 8 of the Rupin Pass trek: Ronti Gad to Sangla

    Set out from the beautiful meadows of Ronti Gad and conclude the trip with a relatively easy trek to the village of Sangla Kada. The trail passes through fields where local shepherds often bring their flocks to graze. Passing the Sangla Kada, you'll trek further to cross the Baspa river and reach Sangla. Your trip ends here.

    Travel to Dhaula in a jeep or similar vehicle and begin trekking along the Rupin river to Gosangu. You'll be accommodated in tents at Gosangu on twin/triple-sharing basis. The tents will be equipped with sleeping bags and mattresses. Today's meal package includes breakfast, lunch and dinner. Lunch may be a packed lunch served at a halt point during the trek.

    Day 3 of the Rupin Pass trek: Gosangu to Jhaka

    Overnight in tents at Jhaka

    Trek to Jhaka, the last town with fairly decent availability of services during the trek to Rupin pass. You'll be accommodated in tents at Jhaka on twin/triple-sharing basis. The campsite will be equipped with common kitchen/dining tents and washroom tents. Today's meal package includes breakfast, lunch and dinner. Lunch may be a packed lunch served at a halt point during the trek.

    Trek across the Rupin pass and descend from the other side to Ronti Gad. You'll be accommodated in tents at Ronti Gad on twin/triple-sharing basis.
