  • Trip introduction

The Chadar trek, also known as the Frozen Zanskar trek, is one of the most unique treks not only in India but also across the world. The trek tests your endurance as you walk over the frozen Zanskar River, and at the same time, it rewards you with some of the rarest and magnificent views of the Himalayas, paired with the unparalleled experience of Ladakhi winters.

On this thrilling quest, you get to witness the bubbling blue waters of Zanskar River flowing under the sheet of ice upon which you stand, along with frozen waters and the snow-clad peaks.

The Chadar trek requires you to trek in sub-zero temperatures at an altitude of over 11,000 ft. above sea level for a long duration of time. Hence, this trek is recommended only for those with prior experience of high-altitude trekking in the Himalayas.

During these months, the temperatures range from -30 to -10 degree Celsius, due to which the Zanskar River gets adorned with frozen sheets of ice, giving it the name of Chadar. These sheets of ice are thick enough for people to walk over. The Chadar is used by the locals to reach Leh from their remote villages as all the other roads get covered in snow. The Chadar trek offers you the experience the harsh winters of Ladakh along with an entirely different perspective of the Ladakhi Mountains.

  • Day 1 of the Chadar trek: Arrive in Leh

Today, you'll be picked up from the Leh Airport in the morning and driven to the guesthouse. Due to Leh's high altitude, you will spend this day and the next acclimatizing. Remember to not exert your body too much today to ensure proper acclimatization. Overnight in a guesthouse at Leh.

Day 2 of the Chadar trek: Acclimatization

Today is yet another acclimatization day. To properly acclimatize your body, you will take a short walk to Shanti Stupa, a sacred Buddhist monument. You will enjoy the gorgeous views of the surrounding snow-capped peaks. You'll then return to the guesthouse to rest. Overnight in the guesthouse at Leh.

Day 3 of the Chadar trek: Medical check-up at SNM Hospital

Today, you will wake up, have breakfast, and head to the SNM Hospital for the mandatory medical check-up. It will take a few hours as there is usually a crowd of other trekkers. Once you clear the medical check-up, you will head back to the guesthouse and begin preparing for your trek. Overnight in the guesthouse at Leh.

Day 4 of the Chadar trek: Drive to Shingra Koma and trek to Tsomo Paldar

You'll begin the day with a short drive to the road head at Shingra Koma, the start point of the trek. The thrilling drive goes through a scenic route, across the Magnetic Hill and the confluence of Zanskar and Indus rivers.

From there, you'll begin the Chadar trek, with your first destination being Tsomo Paldar. The short trek will take some time to cover as you'll get used to walking on the frozen river. Follow all the instructions of the trek leader and watch your step to avoid slipping and falling. Overnight in tents at Tsomo Paldar.

Day 5 of the Chadar trek: Trek from Tsomo Paldar to Dib/Tibb Cave

Today, you'll trek further up the Zanskar River to the Tibb cave. The views of ravines and gorges of the trail are breath-taking with steep cliffs flanking the river. Some sections of the trek are tricky, so caution is advised. Depending on weather conditions and time, you'll either halt for the night at in alpine tents either at Dib or Tibb caves.

Day 6 of the Chadar trek: Trek from Dib/Tibb Cave to Naerak

Today is a long trek as you make your way deeper into the Zanskar gorge. It is an exciting day as you trek to the most scenic part of the trek - the frozen waterfall. From there, you'll head to Naerak Village where you'll get to interact with the locals. Overnight in tents at Naerak campsite.

Day 7 of the Chadar trek: Trek from Naerak to Tibb Cave

Today, you'll begin your return trek with your destination for the day being Tibb Cave. However, do not expect the same trail conditions as it constantly changes with varying temperatures and shifting ice sheets. So, it will be like trekking on an entirely new trail. You'll reach Tibb Cave by late afternoon. Overnight in tents at Tibb Cave.

Day 8 of the Chadar trek: Trek to Shingra Koma and drive to Leh

Today is the last trekking day as you head back to Shingra Koma. En route, you'll cross Gyalpo. The trail today gives you a chance to see the high mountains and perhaps some paw marks of wild animals like snow leopards, ibex and foxes. If you're lucky, you might even spot a snow leopard.

From Shingra Koma, you'll board the transit vehicle back to Leh, reaching there by evening. You'll then rest for the rest of the day. Overnight in the guesthouse at Leh.

Day 9 of the Chadar trek: Depart from Leh

Today, you'll wake up early, have breakfast and bid farewell to the trek leader and the team. You'll then be dropped back to the airport in the morning from where you can catch your flight back home. The Chadar trek ends here.
