The Mount Everest base camp trek is considered to be one of the crowning glories for adventure lovers all over the globe. From the highest point of the trek you can clearly behold the Mighty Mount Everest standing tall in its all-encompassing glory. Trekking in the footsteps of legendary mountaineers like Tenzin Norgay and Edmund Hillary, this trek is definitely one of those life changing adventures.
It is not an easy trek by any means, it requires long hours of walking each day and surviving in high altitudes up to 18,000 ft., but it surely is one of the more popular higher altitude treks for people with less experience with high altitude trekking and it also doesn’t require mountaineering equipment.
How to prepare for the trek?
The Everest base camp trek is a non-technical one; it doesn’t require equipment’s or skills for rock climbing and rappelling. However it does require maximum fitness and familiarity with high altitude trekking on your part to truly enjoy the dreamy above the clouds experience that the trek has to offer. Most of the walking will be strenuous and for long stretched hours, the trail is unpredictable and consists of gravel, icy and rocky paths. Depending on your fitness level, we suggest you start training 2-4 months prior to the trek, combine cardio and strength training and if you are a beginner, it is highly advised for you to start with other moderate Himalayan treks before going for this.
What is the Everest base camp trek cost?
Given the unpredictable nature of this demanding trek, travellers usually avoid planning and budgeting on their own. Although it is completely possible, some of us like avoiding the extra hassle by choosing a package instead. The Everest base camp trek cost mentioned on the package varies from reasonable to big budgets and there are inclusions and exclusions accordingly.
For instance, if you are looking to trek to the base camp without shelling out the big bucks, there might be packages within the range of INR 40-50,000 that may last around 10-15 days. These trips usually include potters to help you with the luggage; basic tea house stays during the duration of the trek and an experienced trek leader along with the technical and safety gears. Please note the trekkers will have to pay for their meals throughout the duration of the trek, their personal expenses like visa costs, and for anything that is not included in the package.
But this is not it, if you feel like you could afford higher prices up to INR 85-95,000; your 15 day Everest base camp trek becomes much more comfortable. Because now, the packages will bring additional perks with the above mentioned ones like – flights from Kathmandu to Lukla and back, all meals at tea houses on trekking days, all required permits and entry to the national park along with covered costs for guides, potters and crew. Please note that personal expenses like any snacks or beverages have to be purchased by the trekker and the packages do not include any flights into and out of Kathmandu.
Lastly, if you feel like going all in, there are luxury packages that will cost a sizeable amount but with many more inclusions above the ones already mentioned. At around INR 2-250,000, the 15 days you spend on the trek will cover heritage tours of Kathmandu city, luxury hotel stay while In Kathmandu, luxury guest house on twin sharing while trekking, hot water showers on five nights and sleeping bags among others. Please note that you will still have to pay for any expanses that arise for personal reason like health insurance, additional meals or beverages and anything that is not mentioned in the package details.
It is important to realise the hype around the base camp trek is not only because of spectacular time you will spend in the lap of the highest mountain peak. But also, because the base camp trek is an experience in itself; from the moment you think about scaling the peaks to the moment you step on that trail, it requires budgeting, training and discipline much in advance. It is always best to calculate the extra expanses and mishaps that could occur during the trek and be prepared the best for your once in a lifetime adventure.
