Deep within the Himalayas, on the Manali-Leh highway, lies the serene point of Sarchu. If you're doing a road trip from Manali to Leh, or heading up to Tso Moriri, you'll pass Sarchu. This is widely known as the mid point for those travelling to the Zanskar region, and offers a quiet, scenic spot for camping in Sarchu. Due to the high altitude of about 14,500 feet, Sarchu offers spectacular views of stark landscape with some small oasis-like spots around water bodies, and a chance to escape the crowds of Manali or Leh during season time.
NOTE: Sarchu is very high and it can be uncomfortable to camp here if you are not suitably acclimatised. Do take adequate precautions such as drinking plenty of water, avoid smoking or alcohol, try to break your journey at Jispa for one night before getting to Sarchu, and avoid any serious exertion. You could also talk to your doctor about starting Diamox before you leave for your trip. The campsite has medical first aid and a jeep on standby for emergencies.
At a soaring altitude of over 14,000 feet, Sarchu stands at the boundary of Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh. It is 222 kilometers away from Manali on the Leh highway and is a popular stop over for those travelling on this route. Situated between Baralacha La to the south and Lachulung La to the north, the beauty exhibited at Sarchu is boundless. It is from here that you can even see the shimmering river of Tsarap Chu. During the summer and monsoons months, this is a popular stop for motorbiking trips between Manali and Leh, but it shuts in winter due to heavy snowfall.
