Trekking
This is a paragraph with little content.

This is another small paragraph.

  • Trip introduction

The Chadar Trek is one of the most unique treks in India, and possibly in the world too. It offers a fascinating opportunity to experience a winter phenomenon in the legendary Zanskar Valley. This 9-day trek is as challenging as it is popular. The first two days are very light, allowing you to acclimatise fully. After this, your trek across the frozen river begins.

This trek is not a challenging climb, but it involves some technical skills (which you can easily learn), trekking over ice of varying thicknesses, and sleeping in caves and tents. You can expect it to be very very cold, so do be prepared for this.

    Destination

Due to the extremely cold winters, the Zanskar river freezes and that's when trekking enthusiasts from around the world flock to this place. The road to Zanskar Valley closes due to the snow and the only way to access the valley is along the frozen river. The entire river becomes a sheet of ice that requires a lot of courage to cross. This frozen river expedition involves walking over ice for 7 days, with the river flowing underneath. Around you, there are frozen waterfalls, natural hot springs that bubble up, splitting the ice and causing it to re-freeze in new patterns, stark Ladakh landscape, and friendly locals going about their daily lives.

    Destination highlights

    • Walk on a sheet of ice that blankets the Zanskar river
    • Take in magnificent views of the Himalayas
    • Sleep in caves for two nights

  • Day 1: Arrival at Leh

Arrive at Leh airport, where you will be greeted by the team representative. Your transfer to the hotel is not included in the trip cost, and will be paid on the spot. The cost is approximately INR 300 per taxi. You'll spend the day resting and acclimatising to Leh. Overnight in the hotel.

Day 2: Trek to Tilat Do

Post breakfast, participants drive through beautiful roads and get their first views of the Indus river. The Zanskar comes into view at the confluence in Nimoo. From there, the road goes along the Zanskar to Tilat Do. Depending on the time, participants trek for an hour or set up camp on the other side of the river. Overnight stay is in tents.

    Day 3: Trek to Shingra

The day begins at 7:00 am with a cup of hot tea. After breakfast, participants set off on the 'Chadar'. Today's aim is to cover 10-12 kms, but if weather conditions or general fitness make this difficult, the group will set up camp wherever possible.

Day 4: Trek to Tibb Cave

After breakfast, participants set off for Tibb Cave. The trail takes them through the deep gorges of the Zanskar Valley with cliffs on both sides. Because the valley is so deep and narrow, there's very little sunlight that reaches. This makes the trekking easier, because the snow is well-packed. You'll end at a big cave, which is used by locals when traversing the valley. Overnight stay is in tents.

    Day 5: Trek to Nyerak

Participants continue the walk through the gorges to the Nyerak village. They pass a large frozen waterfall, which usually flows during the non-winter season. The tents are pitched below Nyerak village.

Day 6: Return to Tibb Cave

Today, participants retrace their steps to the cave. But, a lot of the trail would have changed as the river changes by the hour depending on the temperature and sunlight. So, it may seem like a different trail. Overnight camping is at the Tibb Cave in tents.

    Day 7: Return to Shingra

The deep gorges of the Zanskar Valley greet the participants on their return journey. The overnight stay is in tents.

Day 8: Return to Tilat Do

Participants walk back the way they came and trek back to Tilat Do. They cross the frozen Zanskar for the last time and then board their vehicles back to Leh. Overnight stay is in the hotel.

    Day 9: Depart from Leh

And finally, the trip is over. Check out of the hotel and proceed to your next destination. Trip ends.
