Trekking
This is a paragraph with little content.

This is another small paragraph.

  • Trip introduction

The Chadar Trek is one of the most unique treks in India, and possibly in the world too. It offers a fascinating opportunity to experience a winter phenomenon in the legendary Zanskar Valley. This 9-day trek is as challenging as it is popular. The first two days are very light, allowing you to acclimatise fully. After this, your trek across the frozen river begins.

This Chadar trek is not a challenging climb as it goes along the flat surface of the Zanskar river, but it involves some trekking over ice of varying thicknesses, and sleeping in caves and tents. You can expect it to be very very cold, so do be prepared for this.

    Destination

Due to the extremely cold winters in Leh, the Zanskar river freezes and that's when trekking enthusiasts from around the world flock here for the Chadar trek. The road to Zanskar Valley closes due to the snow and the only route to access the valley is along the frozen river. The entire river becomes a sheet of ice that requires a lot of courage to cross. This frozen river trek involves walking over ice for 7 days, with the river flowing underneath. Around you, there are frozen waterfalls, natural hot springs that bubble up, splitting the ice and causing it to re-freeze in new patterns, stark Ladakhi landscape, and friendly locals going about their daily lives.

    Destination highlights

    • Walk on a sheet of ice that blankets the Zanskar river for the Chadar trek.
    • Take in magnificent views of the Himalayas.
    • Sleep in caves for two nights and camp on the banks of the river.
    • Earn boasting rights for the epic Chadar trek.

  • Day 1 of the Chadar trek: Arrive in Leh

Arrive at Leh airport, where you will be greeted by the team representative. Your transfer to the hotel is not included in the trip cost, and will be paid on the spot. You'll spend the day resting and acclimatising to Leh. Make sure you remain hydrated and eat all meals, and avoid any exertion. By evening, you may go out for a short walk around Leh. This is a good chance to pick up any last minute essentials for the Chadar trek. Overnight in the hotel.

Day 2 of the Chadar trek: Trek to Tilat Do

Today your Chadar trek really begins. You'll eat breakfast and then head off in a vehicle to the start point of the trek. Your vehicle winds through stark Ladakhi terrain, and offers you your first views of the Indus river. The Zanskar comes into view at the confluence in Nimoo. From there, the road goes along the Zanskar to Tilat Do. Depending on the time, you'll trek for an hour or set up camp on the other side of the river. This is a good time to practise the Chadar shuffle - a strange sliding kind of walk that you'll use to walk on the ice. Overnight stay is in tents.

Day 3 of the Chadar trek: Trek to Shingra

The day begins at 7:00 hrs with a cup of hot tea and breakfast. After that, you'll set off on the ice. Today's aim is to cover 10-12 kms, but if weather conditions or general fitness make this difficult, you will set up camp wherever possible. Overnight stay in tents.

Day 4 of the Chadar trek: Trek to Tibb Cave

After breakfast, you'll set off for Tibb Cave. The trail takes you through the deep gorges of the Zanskar Valley with cliffs on both sides. Because the valley is so deep and narrow, there's very little sunlight that reaches. This makes the trekking off the ice easier as well, because the snow is well-packed. You'll end at a big cave, which is used by locals when traversing the valley. Tibb Cave is one of the most famous points on the Chadar trek, and you'll meet other trekkers, porters and locals, and share a cup of tea with them. Overnight stay is in tents.

Day 5 of the Chadar trek: Trek to Nyerak

You'll leave Tibb Cave behind today and continue on the Chadar trek, through the gorges, to the Nyerak village. This is where Nyerak waterfall is, another famous landmark on the trek. This is the biggest frozen waterfall here, and you'll be gazing in awe at it for a long time. Your campsite for the day is near Nyerak village, so if you have time, you can take a walk here. Overnight stay in tents.

Day 6 of the Chadar trek: Return to Tibb Cave

Today, you'll retrace your steps back to Tibb cave. The river continues to crack, thaw, and refreeze in new patterns during each day, so while you're going back over the same route, it looks different each day. There's always plenty to see here. You'll be happy to return to the familiar warmth and camaraderie of Tibb Cave tonight. Overnight in tents.

Day 7 of the Chadar trek: Return to Shingra

You'll depart from your Tibb Cave campsite tonight and head back to Shingra. It's your last full day of trekking on the Chadar trek, so make the most of it. You'll be camping at Shingra tonight. Overnight stay in tents.

Day 8 of the Chadar trek: Return to Tilat Do

Today you'll eat breakfast and trek back to Tilat Do, where vehicles are waiting to take you back to Leh. It's time to bid the Chadar trek goodbye, and you'll clamber gratefully into the vehicle to rest your legs. You'll check into a hotel in Leh. Overnight stay in hotel.

Day 9 of the Chadar trek: Depart from Leh

You'll wake up in your hotel in Leh. Enjoy a hearty breakfast in the hotel, and then it's time to pack up. After that, you'll check out. Your Chadar trek ends here.
