Chopta, Chandrashila and Deoriatal

This trip is a combination of utter beauty, adrenaline-inducing peak climbing, and gorgeous lakeside camping. You'll visit the lush hills of Chopta, also known as the Switzerland of India. Here, you'll walk through wide open meadows and pine forests. As your adventure continues, you'll also stop at Tungnath Temple, which is the highest Shiva temple in the world. You'll also visit the Deoriatal lake, where you'll camp for the night, and go on to Chandrashila Peak, a smaller peak of the Garhwal range. This climb, while not long, is steep, and gives you great views from the top.

Destination

This trek takes you high up into the Garhwal Himalayas, making it one of the best treks for fit beginners looking for a bit of a challenge. During the winter, you can expect snowy vistas all around, and some amount of trekking in the snow, especially at Chandrashila. In the summer and spring months, there are wildflowers blooming along the trails, rhododendron trees in full blossom, and beautiful snow-capped peaks in the distance.

You'll be picked up at Haridwar Railway Station at 6:00 hrs, and will begin your drive to Sari. It's a beautiful drive, taking you past Rudraprayag and Devprayag, so you can expect views of the river all along. At Sari, you can take a leisurely stroll around the village to end the evening. Overnight in a guesthouse or tents at Sari.

You'll arrive at Sari by late afternoon or early evening. Depending on availability, you might be sleeping at a guesthouse, or camping in tents on triple sharing basis. You'll be provided with sleeping bags, mattresses, kitchen and toilet tents, and all camping gear if you're camping tonight. Today's package includes only dinner.

Today you'll begin your trek from Sari. It's a short trek to Deoriatal with frequent stops to rest and admire views of the mountains. You'll encounter a few sections on the trail that require arduous climbing, but views of the Chandrashila peak await to reward your efforts. You'll reach Deoriatal, and will be delighted to see this blissful lake. The clear water of the lake reflects the peaks around, giving you incredible photo opportunities. Overnight in tents at Deoriatal.

Enjoy a hot bonfire after your first day of trekking. Your lakeside campsite is perfect, and you'll be delighted to be here. You'll eat a delicious dinner with your trek buddies before retiring for the night. Today's package includes breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Sari

Deoriatal

07:00 AM

You'll begin your trek from Deoriatal to the upper reaches of Chopta today. Your trail takes you through fairy-tale forests of oak and pine. If you're lucky, you might even spot a shy deer or a red fox in the forest while you trek. You'll trek through a diverse forest with rhododendron trees, small shrubs and bushes, waterfalls, old oaks, river streams and maple woods. Soon, you'll arrive at Baniyakund, a small meadow near the Chopta village. Overnight in tents at Baniyakund.

You'll trek from Deoriatal to Baniyakund. There are wildflowers everywhere, and carpets of pine needles under your feet, releasing their fresh fragrance as you walk. Today's meal package includes breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Today you'll do some serious trekking. You'll begin the day with a short drive to Chopta and then trek to the Tungnath Temple. After that, you'll trek on up to Chandrashila Peak. There are some steep sections, but the views simply keep getting better as you climb higher. You'll spend some time at the top, and then head back to your campsite in Baniyakund. Overnight in tents at Baniyakund.

You'll go on a day trek to Tungnath and Chandrashila. You'll be accommodated at the same campsite in Baniyakund, a small camping ground near Chopta. It's your last night of camping for this Chopta trek, and there's no prettier place to be. Enjoy the mountain views and the night air before you retire for the night. Today's package includes breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Today you'll hike to the roadhead where vehicles will be waiting for you. The drive back to Haridwar takes 7 hours, and you'll be happy to rest in the vehicle and enjoy the views as they move past outside your window. You'll be dropped off in Haridwar by evening. Your Chopta trek ends here.

Trip ends by nightfall.

You'll trek from Baniyakund to the roadhead and travel to Haridwar in a vehicle. No meals are included in today's package, but you'll be served some tea/coffee in the morning before heading out.

Cancellation policy

For cancellations made more than 24 days before departure of the Chopta trek: 95% refund.

For cancellations made 14-24 days before departure of the Chopta trek: 70% refund.

For cancellations made 10-13 days before departure of the Chopta trek: 50% refund.

For cancellations made less than 10 days before departure of the Chopta trek: no refund.

In case of show: no refund.

All refunds will be processed after deducting a transaction fee of INR 200 per person. This fee is charged by The Great Next.

Rules on trip

Travellers are required to follow all instructions of the trek leader during the Chopta trek.

Consumption of alcohol and drugs is strictly prohibited during the trip.

Travellers are requested to treat the local culture with respect and avoid littering, defacing property and monuments and causing general disturbance.

Additional instructions, booking policies, terms and conditions

The tour operator reserves the right to alter or cancel the itinerary of this Chopta trek due to any unforeseen circumstances to ensure maximum safety of travellers and staff. Costs arising due to such a change in itinerary will be borne by the traveller.
