  • Trip introduction

Old Delhi is an ode to the long and glorious history of India, largely focusing on the Mughal rulers. Your tour takes you through the Walled City, or Old Delhi. You’ll start from Jama Masjid, one of the largest mosques in the city, to the Red Fort (home to Mughal emperors for 200 years), and through the lanes of the spice markets, including a pitstop at Parathe Wali Galli or ‘lane of parathas’. The mingling fragrances of roasting parathas, fried potatoes, baking dough, and endless herbs and spices and chutneys will make your mouth water.

Your trip includes a shiny neon-green cycle, a safety helmet, a bottle of mineral water, and tea and breakfast at the end of your trip. You’ll also have two experienced guides who can speak in Hindi and English.

    Destination

During the seventeenth century, the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan founded his capital city, Shahjahanabad. It took eleven years to build this, and was filled with lush gardens, tinkling fountains, gorgeous mosques, and the mansions of the nobles of his courts, and was completely walled in, with 14 gates for access.

In modern times, most of the walls have disappeared, and the structures inside are dilapidated. The once-manicured lanes of the Walled City are now teeming with people, and houses Chandni Chowk, which is probably one of the busiest markets in the world.
