Often a mating ritual, the flickering of hundreds of small fireflies in the darkness of the night is a sight to behold. On this fireflies trek to Kothaligad, you'll trek through bushes and trees and travel to the land of fireflies to explore this mystical phenomenon of nature. You'll trek uphill to an altitude of 3,100 feet to visit the ruins of the Kothaligad fort, where caves and temples of goddesses depict tradition and culture of ancient times. From atop the fort’s pinnacle, you'll catch magnificent views of Siddhagad, Malanggad, Prabalgad, Manikgad and Matheran.

Near the Karjat-Murbad road not far from Mumbai, the Kothaligad Fort is often frequented by trekkers due to an exhilarating trek to the pinnacle. You'll trek on a steep staircase of stones that has been carved into the mountain side. On sections of the stairs where the stones have withered away, you'll need to be careful as you navigate your way uphill. En route, you'll trek through the night among trees glowing with bright, yellow flashes of fluttering fireflies. A special occurrence of nature, the sight of gleaming insects in the dark will be as awe-inspiring as the sight of the rolling Sahyadri hills from atop Kothaligad.

Your trip begins from the Karjat railway station at 18:30 hrs. You may board the second last compartment of the 16:30 hrs fast train from CST and meet your fellow trekkers en route. From here, you'll be taken to the base village of Ambiwadi by tum-tum or a shared, private vehicle. After arriving at the base village, you'll have a short round of introductions and briefing over snacks. Begin a short ascending trek from Ambiwadi and catch sight of the glowing fireflies in the darkness as you trail through bushes and forests. In a few hours, you'll reach Pethwadi and have dinner. After resting at Pethwadi for a while, you'll resume trekking through patches of greenery dotted by bright, yellow fireflies. The trip begins at Karjat railway station at 18:30 hrs. Travel to the base village will be arranged in tum-tum or private vehicles. Today's meal package includes dinner. You'll also be served snacks upon arrival at Ambiwadi. Dinner may be a packed dinner served later in the night. As midnight approaches, you'll stay it in the forests of Pethwadi. Please make sure to bring sleeping bags, bed sheets or mattresses. Spend the night in the wilderness of a dense forest among the twinkling fireflies.
