Trekking
This is a paragraph with little content.

This is another small paragraph.

  • Trip introduction

The Chadar trek is one of the most thrilling and adventurous treks in India. In the local language 'chadar' means blanket. During the summer, this river is a perfect location for rafting, and during the winters it transforms into an ice sheet on which the famous Chadar trek is done. You'll camp in caves and in tents on the ice, trek past towering waterfalls that are frozen in mid-flow, and over thick sheets of ice with the river beneath you. This 9-day, intense Chadar trek is a great test of your endurance, but comes with the reward of an unforgettable experience of Ladakh.

    Destination

The Zanskar river flows through steep rock gorges that can go up to 2,000 feet high. With the gorges curving and narrowing and widening in places, the river turns into a strong beast during the summer. Sometimes you can see the bubbles caused by this churning, trapped under the ice in the winter, when it freezes over, allowing trekkers to embark on the iconic Chadar trek.

    Destination highlights

    • Earn bragging rights for completing the famous Chadar trek.
    • Walk on a sheet of ice that blankets the Zanskar River.
    • Take in magnificent views of the Himalayas.
    • Trek in sub-zero conditions and sleep in caves and on ice.

  • Day 1 of the Chadar trek: Arrive in Leh

Land at Leh's Rimpochee Airport in the morning. The city is very cold in the months of winter, with most of the landscape covered with snow. Due to the off-season, most shops and hotels are usually closed. The daytime temperature in January is around -9 degrees but it can drop down to -15 degrees in the nights. Overnight at Leh in hotel rooms.

Day 2 of the Chadar trek: Day at Leh

Spend the day at Leh to acclimatize to the high-altitude of the city. You can go on short walks to explore the city, but don't exert yourself too much. Remember to keep hydrated and eat regular meals. Today, you'll also visit the Sonam Norboo Memorial Hospital in Leh for a medical check-up. Obtain a health clearance certificate from the hospital after your check-up. Overnight at Leh in hotel rooms.

Day 3 of the Chadar trek: Leh to Shingra Koma

Board vehicles from the hotel and head out to the start point of the trek at Shingra. After a 3-hr drive, during which you'll catch your first view of the frozen Zanskar River, you'll arrive at Shingra. You'll learn how to walk on the frozen ice and begin the 3-hr trek to your first campsite. Overnight at Shingra Koma in tents.

Day 4 of the Chadar trek: Shingra Koma to Tibb Cave

On the trek to Tibb Cave, you'll encounter some the first frozen waterfalls, with many of them the subject of local myth and tradition. You'll also encounter overhang sections of the trail where, if the ice conditions are unsuitable, you'll need to crawl on your stomachs as the safest way to distribute weight over the sheet of ice. As you approach your destination, the trail passes through a narrow gorge, that receives almost no sunlight. Overnight at Tibb Cave in tents.

Day 5 of the Chadar trek: Tibb Cave to Naerak

The highlight of the trek to Naerak is the large frozen waterfall, that trekkers encounter just before the arriving at the campsite. An old wooden bridge serves as a great vantage point to view the frozen waterfall. The path to Naerak is marked by Juniper trees with Laddakhi prayer flags, fluttering with the wind. The campsite, where temperatures may be the coldest of the trip, is located just below Naerak village. Overnight at Naerak in tents.

Day 6 of the Chadar trek: Naerak to Tibb Cave

Retrace your steps back to Tibb Cave. The ice will often crack and freeze once again overnight, presenting a fresh landscape every day. This ensures that the ice formations that you've trekked across on your way from Tibb Cave won't be the same on your way back. Overnight at Tibb Cave in tents.

Day 7 of the Chadar trek: Tibb Cave to Bakula

One of the longest days of the trek, you'll continue your return trek back to Leh and head for today's destination of Bakula. The campsite is located on higher ground, where it often gets windy at night. Bakula is regularly frequented by the native wildlife of the region, but the animals usually shy away from human contact. Overnight at Bakula in tents.

Day 8 of the Chadar trek: Bakula to Leh

After a short, 1-hr walk, you'll arrive at Shingra Yokma, concluding the Chadar trek. Here, you'll wait for Tempo Travellers to come and transport you back to Leh. Overnight at Leh in hotel rooms.

Day 9 of the Chadar trek: Depart from Leh

Check out of the hotel in the morning. Your trip ends here.
