  • Trip introduction

This unique itinerary offers you a fun-filled combination route that takes you to Hampta Pass and Chandratal, as well as Kunzum La, Kaza, Ki and Kibber. You'll visit Ki Monastery, and enjoy a road trip through Spiti region.

    Destination

This Hampta Pass trek takes you along one of the most scenic trails in the Himachal Pradesh region. You'll trek through green valleys filled with apple and apricot orchads, through pine forests and over streams and rickety wooden bridges. As you approach Hampta Pass, the trail becomes rockier and offers a little more challenge. Almost as soon as you cross the Pass, you'll be in Spiti, and the landscape undergoes a dramatic change. You'll see stark grey and brown all around, contrasting with the greenery you've just walked through. And finally, you end at Chandratal. This emerald lake is pristine, and is the highlight of every Hampta Pass trek.

    Destination highlights

    • Conquer the iconic Hampta Pass
    • See the landscape change from Himachal greerery to arid Spiti views
    • Camp alongside the Chandratal lake
    • Take a roadtrip through Spiti
    • Visit Ki monastery in Kaza on your way back

  • Day 1 of Hampta Pass trek: Trek to Chikka

Today you'll arrive at Patlikuhl bus stop early in the morning. You'll be met by the operator and transferred to the campsite. After an early breakfast, you will take a 15 km-drive to Prini. From here, you will trek to Chikka. The trail passes through thick forests of Hampta. You will come across glacial streams and wooden bridges during the trek. The scenery is dotted with beautiful peaks, like the Deo Tibba and Indrasan group of mountains. You will camp at Chikka for the night. Overnight in tents.

Day 2 of Hampta Pass trek: Trek to Ratni Thach

Post breakfast, you will begin your climb to reach the alpine meadows of Ratni Thach. You'll cross streams, and walk through gorgeous green trails. You'll get to Bhalu ka Ghera, also known as the Bear’s Circle because brown bears are said to hibernate here during winters, and then head to the Ratni Thach meadow to set up camp. Overnight in tents.

Day 3 of Hampta Pass trek: Hampta Pass day

Today you'll set off early so that you can cross the pass before the weather gets too windy in the second half of the day. It's a short climb of about 2 kms from the campsite, and you should see some snow here. The view from these spots is breath-taking, and you'll be able to spot the peaks of Lahaul, the majestic Mt. Deo Tibba and Indrasan. You'll spend some time here, and then descend to your campsite at a meadow beside a stream, at Shiya Goru.

Day 4 of Hampta Pass trek: Chandratal day!

Today you're going to see sights you'll never forget. You start your trek over a small stream, and on to the river Chandra bridge. You'll cross to get to Chatru, the roadhead, where a vehicle awaits you. This marks the end of your trekking. From here, you will be driven to Chandratal via Kunzum La, on a thrilling twisting road. The lake is absolutely gorgeous, and you'll be glad that you're camping nearby for the night. Overnight in tents.

Day 5 of the Hampta Pass trek: Return to Manali

Wake up early today so that you can make the most of your time at Chandratal. By late morning, you'll board vehicles and will be driven to Kaza, via the Kunzum La pass, so that you can visit the Ki Monastery. You will drive to Manali via the Rohtang Pass, from where you can get great views. You're welcome to stay one more night at the base camp in Manali, complimentary, if you wish (you'll have to pay INR 650 for meals per person, per night). Trip ends here.
