Venture into the hills of Western Ghats for a day trek to the impressive fort of Lohagad and the centuries-old caves of Bhaje. You'll begin the adventure by hiking on a well-defined route to visit the Bhaje Caves. As you continue trekking, you'll uncover hidden water cisterns and river streams en route to the summit of Lohagad Fort. From the top, you can catch amazing views of the Visapur Fort, the Pawna Lake and the Bhatarashi mountain peak among several other towering hills of the Sahyadri mountain ranges.
This trek to Lohagad Fort will take you over a relatively easy trail, making it perfect for fit beginners as well as experienced trekkers.
Located less than 15 kms from Lonavala, the Lohagad Fort is one of the two twin forts in this area, the other one being the sister fort of Visapur. Although smaller than Visapur Fort in size, the Lohagad Fort is better maintained and features several more ancient structures like archways, gates, temples and pillars. As the monsoon begins to shower the region, the overgrowth of plants, bushes and shrubs turn views from atop the fort into a must-see attraction.
The Bhaje Caves are a series of 22 caves carved from giant boulders. They showcase Buddhist carvings and sculptures that date as far back as the 2nd century BC.
Climb up to an altitude of 3,389 feet on a trek to Lohagad Fort. | Explore the art and architecture of the Bhaje Caves. | Catch beautiful views of monsoon-fed forests over the Sahyadri hills. | Embark on a quick escape from the city into the lap of nature.
