  • Trip introduction

Ever seen a crater before? Created when a meteor struck the earth more than 50,000 years ago, Lonar Crater Lake is the only known hyper-velocity crater in basaltic rock in the world. It is one of the most spectacular phenomena of nature, and is right here, close to home, accessible by an easy trek.

This lake has been a mystery for decades—it has both saline and alkaline waters; there are thriving micro-organisms that are unique to this area; and the asteroid or comet is believed to lie under the lake. It is said that compasses don't work in some areas around the lake. The unique features of the salt-water lake and surrounding region attract different species of resident and migratory birds, and is a must-do for any nature-lover.

    Destination

The centuries old Lonar lake is located few hours away from Jalna, in the Buldhana district of Maharashtra. The lake lies like a blue-green gem amidst the lush greenery all around. Your trek is an easy circuit trek that takes you to all the most interesting points, as well as to some of the ancient ruins of temples that stand along the crater.

    Destination highlights

    • Visit the site of a gigantic meteor crash
    • Attend a session with celebrity author and resident expert on the crater, Mr. Bugdane
    • Marvel at the unique salt-water and sweet water composition of the lake
    • Explore the mystical ruins of temples built in the 6th-12th centuries
