Basic Mountaineering Course in Manali

If trekking, rock climbing, rappelling and mountaineering is what excites you, then this 10-day basic mountaineering course is the perfect experience for you. The course is designed to teach you a range of skills that are required to complete difficult expeditions and summit high-altitude peaks. The course takes you to the mountains near Manali, where you'll spend days learning how to navigate a glacier, how to set up a campsite, how to use a climbing ropes, how to climb over thick ice and several other basic mountaineering skills.

You'll be accompanied by experienced mountaineering instructors who will train you in every activity. Under their guidance, you'll learn and practice techniques in basic mountaineering until you're confident and comfortable with your newly learnt skills.

Destination

This basic mountaineering course takes place in the mountains of Bakarthach, located close to Manali. These mountains offers a differing variety of terrain, ranging from barren mountains to snow-covered inclines. This difference of topography makes it a perfect destination to gradually learn, practice and perfect different mountaineering skills. At the end of the course, you'll test your skills by ascending and descending to a high-altitude vantage point near Bakarthach.

Arrive at the ISBT Kashmiri Gate in New Delhi by 20:00 hrs. Here, you'll board a Volvo Semi-Sleeper bus or similar vehicle and begin the overnight journey to Manali. The bus will drive past the towns of Panipat, Kurukshetra, Chandigarh and Mandi before arriving at Manali. The entire drive takes approximately 15 hours. Overnight in transit.

Report at the ISBT Kashmiri Gate in New Delhi and board a Volvo Semi-Sleeper bus to Manali. Since no meals are provided in today's meal package, you'll want to have dinner before arriving at the start point. You'll spend the night in your seat on the bus. Since you'll be spending the night in the bus, make sure to wear comfortable, loose clothes and carry some dry snacks like biscuits and dry fruits.

The bus will arrive at Manali by early in the morning. You'll transfer to a pre-booked hotel in Manali, where you can rest and relax for a few hours. In the afternoon, you'll head out for a short, day trek to Lamadugh, a nearby trekking destination. The entire trek takes 6-7 hours of hiking over a well-marked mountain trail beginning from Old Manali. Return to the hotel by late evening. Overnight in a hotel in Manali.

Arrive at Manali and embark on a day trek to Lamadugh. This trek is intended to help you acclimatize and warm up for the training which begins tomorrow. You'll be accommodated in a hotel at Manali on twin-sharing basis. Today's meal package includes breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Board a shared, private vehicle from Manali and travel to a small village called Dhundi, located just 2 hrs away. From Dhundi, you'll continue the rest of the journey to Bakarthach on foot. En route, you'll learn a few basic skills of navigation. Upon reach Bakarthach, the mountaineering instructors will show you how to select the best spot for camping and the proper method of setting up tents. Overnight in tents at Bakarthach.

Travel to Dhundi and begin the basic mountaineering course during the trek to Bakarthach. Travel to Dhundi will be in a private, non-AC vehicle. You'll be accommodated in tents at Bakarthach on twin-sharing basis. Today's meal package includes breakfast, lunch and dinner.

You'll spend the day training and practicing various skills of mountaineering. You'll travel to a patch of snow-layered mountain slopes near Bakarthach where you'll learn techniques like toe-kicking and edging over the snow. The mountaineering instructors will help you achieve the proper body positioning and balance. By the end of the day, you'll be able to comfortably navigate a steep patch of snow in the correct manner. The day's session ends by evening. Overnight in tents at Bakarthach.

Spend the day training and practicing various basic skills of mountaineering. You'll be accommodated in the same tents as yesterday. You're required to carry your own sleeping bag, to be used during accommodation in tents. The tour operator can help you buy or rent one at Manali. You'll spend the day training and practicing various skills of mountaineering. The initial part of the day is spent perfecting the various basic skills learnt yesterday. In the later half, you'll be introduced to new skills such as how to arrest a fall caused by slipping and how to ascend and descend using a rope. The day's session ends by evening. Spend the day training and practicing various basic skills of mountaineering. You'll be accommodated in the same tents as yesterday. The campsite will be equipped with common kitchen/dining tent for preparing and serving meals. The campsite will also be equipped with a dry-pit style toilet tent. You'll spend the day training and practicing various skills of mountaineering. After spending a few hours perfecting the various basic skills learnt yesterday, you'll continue with the other techniques like belaying. You'll learn to work as a team while ascending and descending using the ropes. This includes arresting the fall of the team caused by any errors in using the ropes. You'll also learn the proper footwork required to navigate a glacier. The day's session ends by evening. Overnight in tents at Bakarthach.

Spend the day training and practicing various basic skills of mountaineering. Throughout the course, you'll be accompanied by experienced mountaineering instructors and a support crew of drivers, helpers, cooks and porters. Picking up on yesterday's session on the proper footwork for navigating a glacier, you'll proceed for training on some thick snow terrain to practice ice climbing. You'll learn the different ways of using the equipment required for ice climbing such as an ice axe. The day's session ends by evening. Overnight in tents at Bakarthach.

You'll spend the day training and practicing various skills of mountaineering. On the last day, you'll spend most of your time perfecting skills taught over the past few days. In order to practice, you'll embark on a day trek to a high vantage point on a nearby mountain. The route taken to reach the vantage point and then return back to base will require you to utilize the various skills taught over the past few days. The gain in altitude as you utilize these skills adds an additional serving of adventure during the trek. The day's session ends by evening. Overnight in tents at Bakarthach.

The day begins as you help the support crew in dismantling your base camp at Bakarthach. You'll trek back to the village of Dhundi, where vehicles will be waiting to take you to Manali. At Manali, you can spend some time in the local marketplace until it is time to board an evening Volvo Semi-Sleeper bus back to Delhi. Overnight in transit.

Trek back to Dhundi and travel to Manali in a private, non-AC vehicle. At Manali, you can spend a few hours at the marketplace shopping for gifts and souvenirs. In the evening, you'll board a Volvo Semi-Sleeper bus back to Delhi. You'll spend the night in your seat on the bus. Today's meal package includes breakfast and lunch only.

Cancellation policy

For cancellations made more than 45 days before start date of the basic mountaineering course in Manali: 100% refund, minus a cancellation fee of INR 5,000 per person.

For cancellations made between 30-45 days before start date of the basic mountaineering course in Manali: 50% refund.

For cancellations made less than 30 days before start date of the basic mountaineering course in Manali: no refund.

In case of no show: no refund.

All refunds will be processed after deducting a transaction fee of INR 200 per person. This fee is charged by The Great Next.

Rules on trip

A high level of health and fitness is required to enrol in this basic mountaineering course in Manali. If you have any cardiac or respiratory conditions, or suffer from knee or spinal problems, please consult your doctor before booking this trip.

Travellers are required to carry their own sleeping bag, to be used during accommodation in tents.

Travellers are required to follow instructions of the mountaineering instructor during the basic mountaineering course in Manali.

Travellers are required to treat the local culture with respect and avoid littering, defacing property and monuments and causing general disturbance.

Consumption of alcohol, drugs and tobacco products like cigarettes is strictly prohibited during the basic mountaineering course in Manali.

Additional instructions, booking policies, terms and conditions

All accommodation during the course will be provided on a twin-sharing basis. In case the traveller is forced to stay on single-occupancy due to lack of participants to share the room/tent, an additional charge of INR 6,820 will be levied.

The tour operator takes utmost care to ensure safety of the travellers and shall not be held responsible for any mishap, accident or loss of life during the basic mountaineering course in Manali.

The tour operator reserves the right to alter or cancel the itinerary of this basic mountaineering course in Manali in order to ensure the safety of travellers and staff. Any costs arising due to such changes in the itinerary will be borne by the traveller.
