The Pin Parvati Pass Trek

This trek to Pin Parvati Pass is on the top of the list for most experienced trekkers in India. You'll be in the middle of the Himalayas, far away from civilization, trekking through gorgeous landscapes for 12 days. Your trail winds through alpine forests, slopes dotted with wild flowers, and with rivers and lakes to stop by. And that's all before you get to the Pin Parvati Pass. Getting to the Pass is a real victory, and rewards you with fabulous views of the other side, the Spiti side, with rugged barren landscape.

Do note: this trek is not to be taken lightly. The Pin Parvati Pass trek is considered one of the most challenging trek in the Himalayas. This 12 day trek requires some amount of experience because you'll be crossing wide glaciers, climbing steep slopes, and trekking through thick forests. Additionally, once you begin, you'll be days away from civilization, so there's no turning back. You could say that this one is only for the true bravehearts.

Destination

Located at a height of 17450 feet, the Pin Parvati Pass is the only link between Parvati Valley of Kullu and the Pin Valley in Spiti. You'll start from Manali, and trek through the green valleys of Himachal Pradesh, through fruit orchards, blossoming wildflowers, and sparkling rivers and streams. Once you reach Pin Parvati Pass, you'll see the dry, arid landcaps of the Spiti valley, with its sprawling expanse of brown and grey rock under a blue sky.

You'll have to report to Manali Bus Stand by 10:00 hrs. Once assembled, you'll be driven to Barsheni village, from where your trek begins. Barsheni Village is surrounded by thick pine forests and green pastureland, and makes for a delightful first-day trek. You'll pass Kalga village, and head up to Rudranath for the night. Now that you're warmed up, you'll enjoy today's exciting trek to Kheer Ganga. This trek is an enthralling experience, as it includes crossing thick woodlands of pine, scaling steep ascents, and negotiating V turns, while exposing you to enormous landscapes and the Parvati River. You'll be camping near Kheer Ganga, near a waterfall in the middle of a forest. Overnight in tents.

Today’s journey to the high hilly peak of Tunda Bhuj entails crossing long meadowlands, high ascents, bridges, forests, twirling routes and a large overpass. All this, while giving you glimpses of snowy mountain peaks, twittering birds, locals and the Parvati Valley itself! En route, you'll find small shops for tea and biscuits, where you'll enjoy a comfortable break. Once at Tunda Bhuj, you'll get spectacular views of huge mountains covered with snow. Overnight in tents.

Kheer Ganga

Today's trail involves some descent sections, which will be a relief because the trail is quite challenging today. You'll be trekking along the Parvati river, scrambling over scree-covered trails, and doing some sections of river-crossing. There is also a pulley bridge which leans precariously sideways, which you'll have to cross. If you encounter rainy weather, this section can take a long time as you'll have to go slowly. You'll be surrounded by multi-colored flowers, greenery, rocky meadowlands and bridges, and you're unlikely to see too many people. You'll be camping in Thakur Kuan for the night.

Today's a short day of trekking along a relatively easy trail. On this route, you'll be passing streams, forests, and meadows, as well as fields of flowers that stretch out as far as you can see. All around you, you'll see glaciers along the peaks. This peaceful day has one fun session of negotiating a criss-cross of small streams interspersed with slippery rocks. After that, you'll get to the utterly beautiful Mantalai. Overnight in tents.

It's a rest and acclimatizing day today, and you'll be happy, not just for the break, but for a chance to explore the area around Mantalai lake. This lake is formed by glacial waters, and is surrounded with big rocks to sit on, carpets of flowers. You'll see horses grazing in the sweet grass, and all around you, nature is at her very best. This might just be one of your favourite days of the trek. Overnight in tents.

After yesterday's stay in paradise, you'll feel ready to take on today's challenges. The landscape starts to change from lush green to rocky paths and glaciers. You'll be crossing a river and climbing some steep sections to get to the base camp. The base camp is a green meadows surrounded by mountains, and you'll hear the rumble of glaciers all evening. Once at the base camp, celebrate with a delicious dinner and good night’s sleep in your tent.

Mantalai

Today you will trek from the base camp on the Parvati side to the base camp on the Pin side. This takes you through the pass and into the Spiti valley. Your trail takes you over glaciers, rock facades and some real climbing before reaching the Pass. You'll spend some time at the pass, enjoying your victory. Prayer flags flutter in the wind, and you'll get views of the entire Pin valley towards Srikhand Mahadev. After this, you trek to the base camp through ice fields and high rocks covered in grass. Today you will trek from the Pin Valley base camp to Wichkurung Thatch. You begin by crossing a glacier that is dissected by a river, after which you will walk along paths covered with beautiful flowers, before arriving at a small township at the Gompa region. You'll be camping in Wichkurung Thatch for the night.

Pin Valley base camp

Today you'll cover a 5-hr route to Mudh, and board vehicles to Kaza. This marks the end of your trekking for this Pin Parvati Pass trek. The drive allows you to sit back and admire the beautiful sights of the Spiti Valley. In Kaza, you have the evening to visit some monasteries, and meet the friendly locals. Spend the night in Kaza in tents.

Cancellation policy

The cancellation policy is as follows:

For any cancellations made 24 days or more prior to the departure of the Pin Parvati Pass trek: 95% of the total trip cost will be refunded minus any transaction charges, or you can use this amount to book any other trek with the same operator within a year.

For cancellations made between 14-24 days before the departure of the Pin Parvati Pass trek: 70% of the total trip cost will be refunded minus any transaction charges, or you can use this amount to book the same trek with any other batch of the same operator within a year.

For any cancellations made between 10-14 days before the departure of the Pin Parvati Pass trek: 50% of the total trip cost will be refunded minus any transaction charges, or you can use this amount for the same trek in the same season.

For cancellations made less than 10 days before the departure of the Pin Parvati Pass trek: No refund but you can transfer the same trek to a friend.

Rules on trip

Participants must adhere to the instructions of the trip leader/guide at all times during the Pin Parvati Pass trek.

Consumption of alcoholic beverages/drugs during the Pin Parvati Pass trek is not permitted.

Change of trek batch is dependent on the availability of seats in the Pin Parvati Pass batch.

In case of transferring a trek to a friend, he/she should satisfy all the mandatory requirements put forward by the operator.
