  • Trip introduction

A gorgeous trek in many aspects, not just because it takes you into the splendid Sayhadris, but also because it does so in the monsoon. During these months, the Western Ghats blosssom into a rain-soaked paradise. There are waterfalls, mossy trails to navigate, tropical forests with lush green colours, and wildflowers everywhere. Ratangad is a towering 2000 year old fort with rock-cut water cisterns and caves at the top, carvings on the main gate, and a temple too. The most stunning feature is the rock peak of the fort, with a cavity at the top called the Eye of the Needle, or the 'Nedhe'.

Found at an altitude of 4255 feet, Ratangad fort is a historic fort in the Ahmadnagar district in Maharashtra. It overlooks not only the Bhandardara region but also several beautiful peaks such as Alang, Kulang, Kokankada, Katrabai and Kalsubai. An overnight bus journey takes you to Ratanwadi village, from where your 11 km trek to the top of the fort will begin. Once at the fort, enjoy the views, the history behind it and its intrinsic architecture, before heading back to the base.
