Trekking
This is a paragraph with little content.

This is another small paragraph.

  • Trip introduction

Roopkund is a glacial lake nestled in the high mountains of the Uttarakhand Himalayas. It is covered in snow for most of the year, and is completely uninhabited. At a height of 16,500 feet, trekking to Roopkund lake is a tough task, and takes long hours of trekking each day, at a high altitude, making this 7-day adventure a moderate to difficult trek. On this trek, you'll have ropes fixed along the climb, as well as seat harnesses and crampons, to ensure that you reach your destination in the best form. This also makes it an exciting trek with some big challenges.

    Destination

In the 1940s, scattered human skeletons were found around the Roopkund Lake, catapulting it into the limelight. For this reason, it is also known as the Skeletal Lake or the Mystery Lake. While many theories have evolved to explain this group, these remains form a major attraction on the Roopkund trek. The trail moves from charming villages and rivulets in the early stages, to bugyals and lakes of the mid-section of the trip, and finally up into the rockier, scree covered summit stretch.

    Destination highlights

    • Spend 7 glorious days in the Garhwal Himalayas
    • Trek to the mysterious Roopkund Lake, which is frozen from November to June every year
    • Take on the challenge of a tricky climb on the last day of the trek
    • Photograph mountain peaks that are over 18,000 ft high

  • Day 1 of the Roopkund trek: Drive to Lohajung

Participants meet at Kathgodam Railway Station and are driven to the base of the trek, Lohajung. The drive takes you through popular hill stations of Bhimtal and Almora. You'll stay overnight at Lohajung in a tourist lodge.

Day 2 of the Roopkund trek: Trek to Didna Village

The Roopkund trek begins today, with a walk to Didna. The trail starts with a steady climb up the Lohajung Pass, and then descends to Bedni River. The Bedni River is also known as Bedni Ganga, as it is considered sacred by the locals. After crossing a bridge, there is a gradual climb through a forest of Oak and Bamboo. The views from Didna are spectacular and the trail to the village is also extremely picturesque, which will delight participants who are also shutterbugs. Overnight stay in tents or homestays.

Day 3 of the Roopkund trek: Trek to Bedini/Ali Bugyal

Today’s trail is filled with steep ascents. After climbing for a bit, the majestic views of the Garhwal Himalayas greet the participants. The trail then passes through a forest of bamboo and oak, eventually ending at Ali Bugyal, which is a beautiful grazing meadow that lies on top of a hill. Overnight stay is in tents.

Day 4 of the Roopkund trek: Trek to Bhagwabasa

Today's trail weaves through undulating meadows and up to to a place called Ghora Lotni. This is the last point to which horses climb, after which they return, hence the name. But you'll be trekking onwards to Bhagwabasa, where you'll stay for the night. Try to go to bed early tonight, because you'll have an early start tomorrow. Overnight stay is in tents.

Day 5 of the Roopkund trek: Roopkund day

Today is the day where you'll trek to Roopkund Lake! You'll start early, around 04:00 hrs in the morning, so that the snow is still hard. As the day warms up, the snow melts, making it harder to get over it without your shoes getting soaked through. The lake is a 3 km moderate climb from Bhagwabasa, but will take you almost 4 hours to negotiate, thanks to the steep ascent at the end. A further climb of around 20 minutes takes participants to the highest point of Roopkund Lake Trek, i.e. Junargali. From there, you'll head to the campsite in Patharnachuni. Enjoy the celebratory feeling back at the campsite. Overnight in tents.

Day 6 of the Roopkund trek: Trek to Wan

You'll begin your homeward trek today. It's a pleasant trek through Bedni Bugyal, and after that the meadows end. On a clear day, Mt. Trishul is visible in all its glory. The trail takes trekkers through a beautiful rhododendron forest. On reaching Wan village, participants are driven to Lohajung. Overnight in tents.

Day 7 of the Roopkund trek: Lohajung to Kathgodam

You'll eat a hearty breakfast this morning, and then say goodbye to the mountains. You'll board vehicles and begin the long drive back to Kathgodam. It'll take you all day, but you'll be happy to rest your legs after days of trekking. You'll be dropped off at Kathgodam by about 17:00 hrs. Trip ends here.
