  • Trip introduction

This moderately challenging trek to the thrilling (and chilling!) Roopkund Lake offers you a rare chance to see the human skeletons that surround it. The trek requires a bit of muscle and stamina to get accustomed to the changing altitude and terrain and is ideal for fit trekkers. You’ll be walking over verdant green meadows, climbing to more barren heights as you get closer to giant Himalayan peaks, and there’s usually a good chance of snow at the lake itself.

This is a backpacking trip, which means you and your gang will need the spirit of adventure. The entire team pitches in to set up campsites, cook food and thrive in the wild. Everyone carries their own bags, so pack light! You’ll come back leaner, tougher and stronger, and with a whole new set of skills.

    Destination

For years, the mysterious Roopkund Lake has fascinated travellers and trekkers from around the world. The glacial mountain lake is surrounded by hundreds of human skeletal remains for which there was no explanation. In recent years, an international team of investigators found that these were the remnants of a group of pilgrims, who perished in a severe hailstorm near the lake. Whatever the explanation, there is something surreal and incredibly memorable about standing next to weather-whitened skeletons in these high-altitude landscapes. This is one trek you won’t forget.

Acclimatisation and High Altitude Sickness: This is one of the most important aspects of travelling in the high Himalayas and cannot be ignored or set aside. Acclimatisation basically means our body adjusting to lower levels of oxygen (rarefied air) and reduced air pressure as me move up. In case one does not acclimatise properly there are chances of the person facing extreme discomfort and this can be fatal in extreme cases. While there is no set route to getting properly acclimatised there are a general precautions and steps that one can take to initiate good acclimatisation. Our trekking guides will assist you with these steps.

The most important thing is to select the right trek keeping in mind your experience or inexperience, health, objectives and ability.
