Kathgodam is the main railway station of the region and trains are available from Delhi and many other places.
Roopkund is a glacial lake nestled in the high mountains of the Uttarakhand Himalayas. It is covered in snow for most of the year, and is completely uninhabited. At a height of 16,500 feet, trekking to Roopkund Lake is tough and takes long hours of trekking each day. At some points during the trek, you'll have ropes fixed along the climb, as well as seat harnesses and crampons, to ensure that you reach your destination in the best form. Pair this with the high altitude and the unpredictable weather, and you'll see why this Roopkund trek is a challenging one that is not recommended for first-timers.
In the 1940s, scattered human skeletons were found around the Roopkund Lake, catapulting it into the limelight. For this reason, it is also known as the Skeletal Lake or the Mystery Lake. While many theories have evolved to explain these skeletons, they form a major attraction on the Roopkund trek. The trail moves from charming villages and rivulets in the early stages, to bugyals and lakes of the mid-section of the trek to Roopkund, and finally up into the rockier, scree covered summit stretch.
