Popular dive sites in Phuket

There are many uniquely beautiful dives sites around Phuket that are perfect for any level of diver but you'll find that the best ones are situated off shore and are easily reachable by boats. It flaunts scenic seascapes and rich aquatic life.

Koh Bida Nok- Phi Phi

The thrill of scuba diving in Phuket is incomplete without a dive in the waters of Koh Bida Nok in the world-famous Phi Phi Islands. It is one of the favourite sites for all scuba diving enthusiasts and is accessible to all levels of divers.

It has sandy bottoms, an extensive array of soft and hard corals and huge schools of fish in formation like snappers, surgeonfish, Butterfly fish, travallies and tuna. It’s truly breath-taking and leaves any diver agape. You can also expect to spot Black Tip Reef Sharks and Whale Sharks. You can find Turtles, cuttlefish and octopus, seahorses, sea snakes, moray eels and even the incredible Zebra Moray.

Racha Yai

The crystal waters of Ko Racha Yai and Ko Racha Noi Islands have impressive visibility and a very mild drift. This makes it perfect for beginners to experience the adventure of Scuba diving in Phuket. It's also the safest place to begin your Discover Scuba Diving trip or get your PADI Open Water certificate.

You'll be finning through limestone rocks, flourishing and branching staghorn corals and be amazed at the sight of yellow snappers, barracudas, lionfish, scorpionfish, damselfish, puffers, triggerfish, moray eels, turtles and squids.

King Cruiser Wreck

The wreckage of the Japanese ferry King Cruiser attracts gigantic schools of snappers, barracudas, fusiliers, rabbitfish, goatfish snappers, lionfish, scorpion fish and porcupine fish making it a marvelous kaleidoscopic sight for divers.

Lying on the sandy bottom since 1997, she's a majestic beast with open passageways and multiple decks slowly degrading away with threatening sharp metal protrusions sticking out at places. The current can also get a little vigorous sometimes, hence, this site is recommended only of Advanced certified divers.

Shark Point

Regarded as one of the best scuba diving sites in Phuket, it has earned its name due to the leopard sharks that regularly bask on the sandy bottoms. You can also take a peek at other species of sharks that inhabit the area mainly Zebra sharks and Bamboo sharks.

Shark point has two limestone pinnacles which is encircled and decorated with gorgonian corals, varied colourful soft corals and is alive with an abundance of sea life. Moderate current at this spot means that it's not always approved for beginner divers.

Best time to go/Weather

The climate in Phuket is tropical and it is possible to dive into its waters all year round, but the best diving period is between the months of November to April. The visibility is very good during these months.

There are flights from major city hubs in India flying directly to Phuket. Phuket International Airport is the second largest hub in Thailand. You can also opt to catch a flight to Bangkok and then a domestic flight to Phuket.

From the airport, there are bus and taxi services you can avail to reach your hotel or dive centre. You may be picked up from the airport itself, depending on your trip package. Your operator will arrange a boat to take you from the dive centre to the dive site.

You’ll be provided with a dive suit for your dive by your operator. You need to wear a swimsuit, bikini or swimming trunks beneath the suit. Make sure it’s comfortable as the dive suit worn over is very tight. When you’re not diving, wear light clothes and slippers/ floaters.

All the equipment needed for the dive will be provided to you by your operator. You will need to carry loose cotton shirt/dress to wear on boat between dives, sunglasses and sunscreen. You can also carry an underwater camera to capture all the beautiful sights you’ll witness.

No preparation is needed for first timers or beginners before scuba diving but being fit makes your scuba diving experience more enjoyable. Breathing exercises or yoga can be undertaken to help you breathe better and slower.

Scuba diving in Phuket - Frequently Asked Questions

You don't have to carry any scuba diving equipment as your operator will provide all of them including oxygen tanks, diving suits, masks, etc. You should carry loose cotton clothes, sandals, sunglasses and sunscreen for when you won't be diving. Also, be sure to carry a water bottle and some light snacks.

For scuba diving in Phuket, you can choose from introductory day trips to a complete course. If you have limited time on your hands and just want to experience scuba diving without committing to a course, then Discover Scuba Dive or Try Dive is for you. However, if you want to get your certification, you can sign up for PADI Scuba Diver or PADI Open Water Diver course.

The Open Water Diver course gives you more advanced skills and lets you dive deeper, but both get you certified as scuba divers. The Open Water Diver course also makes you eligible for the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course.

During your dive, the operator will provide you with a dive suit. Under the suit, you need to wear a swimsuit/bikini/swimming trunks. Make sure you’re comfortable in whatever you’re wearing under the suit. You should avoid wearing swimwear with very large or poky embellishments as those might press into your flesh once the wetsuit is on, or you might damage the wetsuit.

Not necessarily. If you’re booking a Discover Scuba Dive package, then you don’t need to know how to swim at all. However, for all other scuba courses, you will need to pass a 200-meter swimming and 10-minute floating test.
