Trekking
This is a paragraph with little content.

This is another small paragraph.

  • Trip introduction

Summit the highest mountain peak in the Stok range of Ladakh on this action-packed, challenging trek to the peak of Mt. Stok Kangri. A fast-paced adventure, this trek takes you over thick snowy glaciers, steep rocky inclines and barren grey trails. At an altitude of more than 20,000 feet, you'll reach the summit of Mt. Stok Kangri, a bucket-list item for many adventure junkies. At the top, panoramic views of the snow-stormed landscape await, with towering peaks peeking over the clouds. The only trek to this altitude that doesn't require mountaineering or technical expertise, the Stok Kangri trek is an adventure of a lifetime.

    Destination

Stok Kangri is a snow-laden peak that is often visible from Leh city as a single tall mountain reaching towards the sky. In the months of summer, the snow cover in the lower parts of the mountain melts away, allowing trekkers to summit the peak without any technical expertise. However, the trek remains quite challenging and serves as an introduction to high-altitude trekking and amateur mountaineering. In the months of winter, the barren and cold desert swamps the mountain with snow, allowing only experienced climbers with technical expertise to reach the peak.

This itinerary for the Stok Kangri trek gives you plenty of time to learn and acclimatize to the high-altitude before attempting the summit. After hours of trekking under the night sky on summit day, you'll reach the peak to be rewarding with enthralling views of a sunrise over the Karakoram and Zanskar mountain ranges.

  • Day 1 of the Stok Kangri trek: Arrive in Leh

Land at the Leh Airport and take a taxi to reach your hotel in the city. Here, you'll check-in and freshen up after a long flight and take some rest. In the evening, gather with the rest of your group for a short briefing session led by the trek leader. You'll learn about the climate and itinerary for your upcoming trek, along with important safety protocols. Overnight in a hotel at Leh.

Day 2 of the Stok Kangri trek: Day at Leh

Take a tour the cultural attractions in Leh and visit the town's Tibetan marketplace or Leh Palace. The day is set aside to allow your body to get used to Leh's high altitude. This day of acclimatization is very important if you want to reduce the risk of headache, dizziness and fatigue when you're trekking at higher altitudes. Try not to exert yourself too much, have timely meals and keep yourself hydrated. Overnight in a hotel at Leh.

Day 3 of the Stok Kangri trek: Leh to Chang Ma

The day begins with a short 40-min drive from Leh to the Stok village. You'll get impressive views of the Ladakhi range, with sky-high peaks, on your way to the village. Here, you'll get down and begin trekking on a narrow trail towards Stok Kangri.

Slightly difficult, with a few sections of steep inclines, the day's snow-laden trail gives you a taste of the days to come. You should reach your first campsite of Chang Ma just in time for a hot lunch, with the evening set aside to lose yourself in views of Stok Kangri rising tall above you. Overnight in tents at Chang Ma.

Day 4 of the Stok Kangri trek: Chang Ma to Mankorma

After an early morning wake-up call, you'll make your way over a wide trail alongside a small river stream. Fed by the melting glaciers over Stok Kangri, the river stream offers a continuous source of water, throughout the day's trek. Look out for gorgeous views of Ladakh's barren landscapes when your stop to rest at vantage points along the way. The relatively easier inclines in altitude ensure an easier time on the trail. Overnight in tents at Mankorma.

Day 5 of the Stok Kangri trek: Mankorma to Stok Kangri base camp

Climbing higher from Mankorma, you'll be headed to the base camp of Stok Kangri on today's trek. Considerably more difficult, the trek presents a unique challenge as you feel a drop in the oxygen levels in the air. Slowly, you'll keep trekking through the morning with enough time to stop and rest until you reach the base camp by afternoon.

Located in an area marked by scant greenery with a few lakes and river streams, the base camp will be your home for three nights as you train and attempt the summit of Stok Kangri. Overnight in tents at Stok Kangri base camp.

Day 6 of the Stok Kangri trek: Day at Stok Kangri base camp

Today, you'll take it easy and rest at the base camp. In the first half of the day, you'll have training sessions with your trek leader. These sessions will prepare you for tomorrow's summit attempt with key pointers on how to navigate the snow and use an ice-axe. The rest of the day is free for you to sleep, rest and enjoy scenic views of mountains from the base camp. Your summit attempt begins approximately two hours before midnight.

Day 7 of the Stok Kangri trek: Day trek to Stok Kangri peak

Under the cover of a dark night, you'll begin trekking from the base camp with torches and lamps in your hand. The initial trek takes you to the south ridge of Stok Kangri. En route, you'll cross a wide glacier where sinking snow may mean entrenched snow till your knees. You'll be well-prepared for such encounters from yesterday's training sessions.

From the south ridge, a short and steep climb takes you to the peak. Take a moment to stand atop the peak, gaze at panoramic views of the landscape and celebrate your successful summit climb. You'll climb back down on the same route and reach the base camp by noon. Overnight in tents at the base camp.

Day 8 of the Stok Kangri trek: Stok Kangri base camp to Leh

Joyful with your successful trek to the peak of Stok Kangri, you'll climb down the mountain, retracing your steps to Stok village. Descending down takes little time but a few tricky sections may hold you up. You'll enjoy clear views of the grey mountains, the gushing stream, large rocks and boulders, white-washed glaciers. Vehicles will take you back from Stok to Leh, where you'll be glad to be inside a hotel room. Overnight in a hotel at Leh.

Day 9 of the Stok Kangri trek: Depart from Leh

Check-out of the hotel and proceed to your next destination. You can travel back home onboard a flight from Leh Airport or spend a few more days in Ladakh. Your Stok Kangri trek ends here.
