Jammu Kashmir is one of the most pristine and beautiful states of India. The surreal beauty of the green meadows, fruit orchards and sparkling rivers and lakes inspires travellers to compare it to heaven. While there are plenty of ways to explore this state, the top treks in Kashmir will take you to some of the lesser-known destinations so you can get a complete experience of the state. The lush landscape of Kashmir is directly contrasted by the stark region of Ladakh, which is part of the state of Jammu Kashmir. This high altitude desert kingdom is famed for its high passes, brackish water lakes, deep blue skies and a landscape that is larger than life. The dramatic geography makes it a hub of exhilarating activities like white water rafting, mountaineering, and camping. Read our blog about the Top Adventures in Kashmir.
Out of the many challenges of trekking in this region, one of the tasks is acclimatizing to the altitude. Most treks take place at a high altitude and require you to rest for a day or two so that your body can adjust. Here are the top treks that you can do in Jammu and Kashmir.
The unique thrill of trekking on the frozen Zanskar River in Ladakh makes this the best-known top trek in Kashmir. You’ll trek on the icy sheet (Chadar) that is formed on the river for all days of your trek. The route takes you between the soaring walls of the river valley, and while it is not technically challenging, the altitude and extreme cold make this a difficult trek. You’ll see bubbles that are frozen in ice, stand and gaze at towering ice waterfalls, and drink hot butter tea in ancient Tibb cave, where the walls are darkened by thousands of campfires.
The Great Lakes of Kashmir trek is a must-do if you want to get far away from civilization. You’ll trek into the wild meadows of Jammu Kashmir, exploring some of the most beautiful lakes in the region. Situated at an altitude of 11,500 feet, these mountain lakes are blue-green and pristine, surrounded by stunning views of pine forests, fields of wildflowers, and snowy Himalayan peaks.
Starting from close to the scenic town of Leh, this trek takes you to a height of 20,182 feet! The early section of the trek takes you through beautiful mountain scenery, and you'll camp at gorgeous campsites. From base camp the climb becomes steep and the air thins, posing a thrilling challenge for trekkers. While it involves some rock-climbing, you don’t need to have any technical mountaineering skills to get to this altitude, which makes it one of the top treks in Kashmir.
The Markha Valley trek is one of the top treks in Jammu Kashmir, because it takes you deep into the valleys around Leh, giving you a glimpse into the daily life of the Ladakhi people. The tiny Markha village, consisting of only about 25-30 homes, has sprung up on the banks of the Markha river. The small oasis of greenery is a dramatic contrast to the rest of the arid terrain of Ladakh. You’ll explore remote gorges, vast undulating grazing grounds, and ancient monasteries. The campsites here feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere, with no civilization for miles around, and only an endless starry sky above.
The twin lakes of Tarsar and Marsar are the perfect place for a nature lover or photographer to escape to. Surrounded by mountains, nestled in the midst of meadows of sweet grass, these sparkling lakes reflect the clear blue skies above. It’s a stunning sight, and the cherry on top is a chance to camp right beside the lakes.
Last month we completed Kedarkantha Trek through TGN. Was our first trek ever and couldn't have been better. Everything right from the pickup to drop at dehradhun station was totally worthy. On booking the trek we were guided with respect to the gears required and the level of fittness. Emails for bagpacking and all the required checklists were circulated well before time.Dirver contact details and names of other particioants were also notified on watsapp .On the trek experience was out of the world with surprisingly awesome food even at an altitude of 12,500 feet's. Everything in inclusions were provided FOC. Would totally recommend TGN !!! Absolutely value for money !!!
'We travelled to Joshimath, Valley of Flowers, Hemkund, Badrinath, Auli thr them. The destinations are extremely beautiful and must visit. However service of the tour operator was very average. The guide was not organised and cleanliness in the hotels were much wanting. Timeliness was also an area of improvement.'
'I completed a trek few days back to Kuari pass and pangarchulla peak. I went solo for the trek and had my own apprehensions and doubts since the very beginning. But thanks to team TGN and Tanvi specifically for clearing out all my doubts, giving me the confidence to go ahead and helping me out on each and every aspect of the trek. This was my first trek and I'm so glad I took TGN's help because it surely wont be the last! From picking a correct trek to finally leaving for the trek, Tanvi surely did a great job :) So thanks TGN! Keep going guys :)'
'Badly need to work on their website to sync information. Booked a trip (3 room) with them (ac cottage stay) for Rishikesh with 100% refund policy as per the link shared in mail. But I was surprised when on the next day of booking, I received the message saying that the cottage I paid for and received a booking confirmation has been allocated to someone else. Instead I had to pay extra for a non ac tent(with cooler instead of ac) property at the similar location. But the bad experience did not end there. When we had to cancel the room for 5 of the members, they applied a cancellation fees which was not stated anywhere in cancellation policies on website link. I will not suggest anyone to use this site. Please book directly to avoid any such inconvenience and surprises owing to misleading policies. Note: I had contacted the property owner directly and he had quoted a lower price(all inclusive package via mail) on direct booking than thegreatnext. So think hard before opting for TGN if you gave option to reach owner directly. We had opted for TGN only based on the full refund policy that the site stated. Edit: I would acknowledge the efforts from Tanvi from thegreatnext who tried to accomodate the updated requirements. I have given 2* only because of her inputs. However, I would like to point out that my concern is not with any person but it is with lack of clarity with policies and syncing with the property owners at the end of Thegreatnext website. This is a major drawback that needs to be bridged.'
'What an amazing trip we had. 6 of us decided to go for a trip to valley of flowers. and I started finding someone who could arrange a trip for us and found TGN sent query and immediately got back response from the team. Amit was our SPOC and the left no stone unturned to make sure we have a wonderful trip. All arrangements were awesome. comfortable stay / transport arrangement etc. Food in this area in any case is not great as the place is on too much height and sending stuff there is a challenge for locals. My team's feedback on this trip is as follows: 1. Journey was comfortable, all drivers were good & trained. 2. Stay @ Himalaya Abode was nice, What an awesome view from the valley. neat and clean property. one of our friend left a small valet with money inside, was safely returned to her after 4-5 days. We were highly impressed with this gesture. 3. Stay @ Holiday Home, Ghangria , looking at the seasonal & temporary arrangement, place was ok but Food was pathetic. That could be improved. 4. Guide : Our guide was very shy but helpful. We gave our feedback to him and to TGN. hope they work on it and he is more talkative next time. I guess we knew more then him ;-) about the place. he needs some training on guiding a tour. He helped one of our friend come down from Hemkund when she had high altitude sickness and was very slowly walking. Thanks to him for extending his help. Overall an excellent experience. Thanks to team TGN. Hope to have more and more trips with u guys.'
'The experience with The Great Next was amazing, start from the planning part to the last day of the trek. The spokesperson was easily accessible and was more than happy to answer any question.. All the do's and dont's were clearly explained right before the trek.. Everything was well arranged , supportive local staff , beautiful memories! It was just perfect..!! A trek to be remember always. Kudos to The Great next for the well-arranged trek. Looking forward for my trek with The Great Next.'
'I have availed the serices twice. The first was for the Valley of flowers/ Hemkund sahib trek and the next was the Kedarkantha trek. I have had a pleasant experience both times. I have found the package reasonable and the guide and facilities which they provide are top notch. The only concern I had on both the treks was that the itenerary was a bit too stretched and on both occassions we completed the trek in half the time and left early, but that might be because me and my friend have good stamina. So, cant blame TGN for that fully. All in all i would alys recommend TGN to others. Special mention to Venkat, who has been my point of contact at TGN on both occassions and I have been really impressed with him.'
'Wonderful !!! shout-out to my man Mr. Venkat for arranging the best trekking experience..'
'When I bored of daily routines and surfing for some exciting trips or outings, I came across this website. I gave them my contact details and soon I got a prompt call from Mr.Raul from TGN. From then to till end of the trek they guided. coordination is appreciable. And trip was amazing with crazy trekmates and trek leads. It was one of my best well spent weekend. I would love to suggest TGN to you too...'
