  • Trip introduction

    This adventure combines a series of fun adventures: trekking through the alpine environs of Chopta, a visit to the lakeside paradise of Deoriatal, all the fun of climbing a smaller peak in the Garhwal Himalayas, and a visit to Tungnath. On this Chopta trek, you'll camp beside Deoriatal lake, where the clear water reflects the mountains and forests around. You'll climb Chandrashila Peak which is 13,123 feet high and is home to Tungnath, the highest Shiva temple in the world, where you'll stop to take in the serene atmosphere.

    This trek to Chopta Chandrashila is not difficult and can be done by first-timers, but the climb to Chandrashila can be challenging for children or for those without any experience. It's a good option for fit beginners who want a mix of mountain fun and beautiful scenery, as well as the added thrill of some peak climbing.

    Destination

    This trek to Chopta Chandrashila takes you through forests of pine, oak and rhodendron, besides a lake and thorugh meadows that are dotted with wildflowers. In Chopta, you can expect a spectacular sunset, and rolling views of the slopes around. From Chopta, you'll trek through golden meadows towards Tungnath temple, where you'll spend some time soaking in the peace. And finally, your peak day is an exciting one, starting at dawn, and ending at the top with views of the morning sunlight falling on Himalayan giants like Nanda Devi, Trishul, Chaukhamba and more.

    Rules on the trip

    The operator has a set of guidelines for the trek to Chopta Chandrashila that must be adhered to based on the tenets of ‘Leave No Trace’ & ‘Tread Light’ policies. These guidelines are very simple and emphasise on travelling in small groups, better planning, understanding impact of camping, proper waste disposal, respecting local cultures, sensitivity towards wildlife and so on.

    Participants must adhere to the instructions of the team leader on this Chopta trek.

    Smoking, consumption of alcohol, narcotic drugs etc. is strictly prohibited during the trek to Chopta Chandrashila.

    During the Chopta trek, participants must follow a proper waste disposal system.

    Cancellation policy

    For cancellations made 45 days or more before the departure of the trek to Chopta Chandrashila: Full refund (after deducting any expenses that have been incurred for hotel bookings, transport, etc.) minus any transaction charges.

    For cancellations made 30-45 days before the departure of the trek to Chopta Chandrashila: 75% of trip cost will be refunded (after deducting any expenses that have been incurred for hotel bookings, transport, etc.) minus any transaction charges.

    For cancellations made 15-30 days before the departure of the trek to Chopta Chandrashila: 50% of trip cost will be refunded (after deducting any expenses that have been incurred for hotel bookings, transport, etc.) minus any transaction charges.

    For cancellations made 0-15 days before the departure of the trek to Chopta Chandrashila: No refund.

    No show: No refund.

    Payment for this trek to Chopta Chandrashila will not be adjusted towards any future trips.

    Additional instructions, booking policies, terms and conditions

    The operator takes utmost care to ensure safety of its clients. However in the case of any unforeseen mishaps, the operator will not be liable for any injuries caused or for loss of life on the Chopta trek.

    If due to bad weather, sickness, natural calamity or any other personal reasons, the itinerary of this trip is changed, the extra charges for accommodation, transport, etc, will be borne by the guests. The same will be applicable if a guest decides to change the itinerary due to personal reasons, injury, or bad health.

    Participants will be required to fill up an indemnity form before embarking on the trek to Chopta Chandrashila. You are requested to inform the operator if you're suffering from any major ailment and submit your health certificate.

    All fixed departure trips will be run according to a fixed schedule and standard services. In case of individual requirements, the operator may not be able to entertain the request or may have to charge additional amounts. Please be aware of this fact.

  • Day 1 of the Chopta trek: Haridwar - Kund

    You'll meet at Haridwar railway station at 07:00 and enjoy a scenic 6 hour drive to Kund. Your drive takes you along the Ganga and Alaknanda river before turning into the Mandakini valley. Enroute you will cross the holy towns of Rishikesh, Devprayag and Rudraprayag. At Kund, your campsite is set up, and you can spend the evening relaxing, or you can warm up those muscles with a short hike by the river. Overnight in tents.

    Day 2 of the Chopta trek: Kund - Chalkot

    Your Chopta trek starts today! You'll be driven to Kakragad, the start point of the trek, which is 30 mins away. There are natural pools here that you might want to splash in, but keep your feet dry because your trek starts now! You'll trek to Makkumat, walking along an easy trail through pine forests and past quaint Himalayan villages. It's a five hour trek, at the end of which you'll be picked up and driven to Chalkot. You'll spend the night in tents here.

    Day 3 of the Chopta trek: Deoriatal day!

    You'll start your day with another short drive today, heading out to Sari. You'll be covering the Deoriatal section of the Chopta trek today. The trek takes you through an enchanting mixed forest, abundant in bird life. By afternoon, you'll reach the beautiful mirror-like Deoriatal lake and spend the rest of the day exploring the serene surroundings. The lake reflects Chaukhamba Peak, and makes for some great photography. After that, you'll trek onwards through the quiet forest trails of Rohini Bugyal, and on to Tali. You'll be driven back from here to Chalkot for the night.

    Day 4 of the Chopta trek: Chandrashila summit day!

    The day begins early, so you have a chance to get to the peak of Chandrashila in the early hours of the morning. The climb is demanding but extremely scenic. It takes about a couple of hours to reach Tungnath temple. After a brief stop for refreshments and rest, you'll carry on with the trek to reach the summit of Chandrashila peak, at 13,123 feet. The views from the summit are unparalleled, with the tall Himalayan peaks (Nanda Devi, Trishul, Chaukhamba and many more) and surrounding valleys all around. After spending some time here, you begin your descent to Chopta, where vehicles will be waiting for you. From here, you'll be driven back to Kund where your tents are waiting for you.

    Day 5 of the Chopta trek: Return to Haridwar

    Post breakfast, you'll be driven back to Haridwar. Your Chopta trek ends here.

    Today you'll enjoy a scenic drive from Kund to Haridwar, resting your legs after all that trekking. You will be dropped off at Haridwar before nightfall. Trip ends here.
