  • Trip introduction

Mt. Kanamo, or the White Hostess, is a glacial mountain with a landscape formed over thousands of years of natural erosion. The Kanamo Peak trek is one of the few treks in India that takes you up a dizzying summit of almost 20,000 feet, without requiring technical climbing skills.

While this is a tough trek, with steep inclines in stark terrain, it has the advantages of being an easily accessible one, and will allow you to summit on Day 3 itself. This unique itinerary is one of the few that splits the first day of trekking the entire 18 kms from Kibber village to the base camp into two days, giving you time to acclimatize, and leisure to enjoy this spectacular region.

IMPORTANT: The trek starts from Kibber at 06:00 hrs on the first day. You should plan to arrive stay in Kibber a day or two earlier, so you can acclimatize fully and not be late for the trek departure.

    Destination

The Kanamo Peak is viewed by locals as the holiest mountain in Spiti, and you'll feel a sense of awe when you see it too. You'll start from the charming village of Kibber, that time seems to have left behind. From here, you set out into the territory of the ibex and the snow leopard. The landscape is barren and rocky, with hardly any vegetation to relieve the weather-bleached grey stone. From the summit, you'll be able to see spectacular views of the Lahaul and Spiti ranges, as well as of Pin Parvati Pass. Mt. Kanamo's twin peak Shila is not far and is always blanketed with thick snow.

    Destination highlights

    • Earn supreme boasting rights with this summit trek to Kanamo Peak.
    • Trek through the moonscape of Spiti.
    • Keep your eyes open for a glimpse of an ibex, blue sheep, Tibetan wolf, or the elusive snow leopard.
    • Summit to an astounding height of 19,600 feet without any technical mountain climbing skills.
    • See the gigantic Himalayan ranges from Mt. Kanamo peak.

  • Day 1 of Kanamo Peak trek: Kibber to Kanamo basecamp 1

You'll be starting at 06:00 hrs in the morning, while the village of Kibber is still waking up. Eat a hearty breakfast and set off from close to the village. It's a fairly steep trail for about 3 hours, so will warm you up completely. After that, you can relax a bit as the trail flattens a little. You're camping at an altitude of 16,000 feet today, and will get wonderful views from your campsite. Overnight stay in tents.

Day 2 of Kanamo Peak trek: Basecamp 1 to Basecamp 2

Today you set off to the second base camp of the Kanamo Peak trek. The trail today has a gradual ascent and you'll be climbing to about 17,700 feet. Take regular sips of water as you walk, to help you acclimatize better. You'll come upon a small lake that provides the water for Kaza, and the sparse vegetation around it offers a little colour in an otherwise muted landscape. From Basecamp 2, you'll see the peak towering above you. It's a big day tomorrow, so make sure you get enough sleep. Overnight in tents.

This part is tricky, so stay close as a group. And then suddenly you're at the peak of Mt. Kanamo! It's a fabulous feeling, and you'll be able to take photographs and see 360-degree views of mountains all around. You'll spend some time here, and then begin your descent, returning to basecamp 2 again for the night. There's a celebratory feel in the air tonight, and you'll be happy, but exhausted. Overnight in tents.
