  • Trip introduction

    The Markha valley trek has been one of the most popular treks in Ladakh. The hamelt of Markha seems like a little oasis in the arid terrain of Ladakh, where participants can trek through remote gorges and vast undulating grazing grounds, cross several streams and rivers, and experience Ladakhi culture and way of life. A moderately challenging trek, participants get to climb two very high passes - Gandala la (4800 m) and Kongmaru La (5150 m) offering stunning views from the top. This trek is perfect for fit first timers and seasoned trekkers alike.

    The Markha village in Ladakh is a slice of pristine paradise - picturesque meadows, the river Markha flowing by the village, rugged mountains in the distance and surrounded by willow and poplar trees.

    Rules on the trip

    The operator has a set of guidelines that all participants must adhere to based on the tenets of ‘Leave No Trace’ and ‘Tread Light’ policies. These guidelines are very simple and prioritise travelling in small groups, better planning, understanding impact of camping, proper waste disposal, respecting local cultures, sensitivity towards wildlife and so on.

    Cancellation policy

    If you cancel 45 days before departure: Full refund (after deducting any expenses that have been incurred for hotel bookings, transport, etc.)

    If you cancel 30-45 days before departure: 75% of trip cost will be refunded (after deducting any expenses that have been incurred for hotel bookings, transport, etc.)

    If you cancel 15-30 days before departure: 50% of trip cost will be refunded (after deducting any expenses that have been incurred for hotel bookings, transport, etc.)

    If you cancel 15 days or less before departure: No refund

    The operator takes utmost care to ensure safety of its clients. However in the case of any unforeseen mishaps, the operator will not be liable for any injuries caused or for loss of life.

    All participants would be required to sign an indemnity form before the start of the program, without which they will not be allowed to take part in the trip/program/activities.

    If due to bad weather, sickness, any natural calamity or any other personal reason the itinerary is changed, the extra charges arising due to it will be borne by the guests.

  • Day 1: Arrival in Leh

    Participants meet at the hotel in Leh for breakfast. The day is spent exploring the surrounding areas, relaxing and acclimatizing.

    Day 2: Leh sightseeing and acclimatization

    Today will be at leisure and you can choose to go on a sightseeing trip, check out the local markets or just relax at the hotel. The acclimatization in Leh is paramount for this trip.

    Day 3: Leh -Zingchen -Yurutse

    Participants depart for Zingchen after an early breakfast - you drive till Zingche, past the Spikut village. The trek today is a warm up and you are sure to like the many stream crossings along the way. The trek begins from Zingchen - this is a short trek with a moderate gradient. You hike through Rumbak village to reach Yurutse, with beautiful barley fields all around.

    Day 4: Yurutse - Ganda la - Skiu

    The trek today begins with an ascent to the Ganda La pass. It’s a steep climb after a while, and strong winds around the pass add to the challenge. You can enjoy some stunning views of the valleys, the Zanskar range, and distant summits of the Himalayan range. From the pass you start descending to Shingo village, and then the trail heads into a narrow gorge leading towards Skiu. Witness the beautiful confluence of rivers from the Markha valley and Shingo at Skiu.

    Day 5: Skiu - Markha

    It’s a long but moderate trek today till the scenic village of Markha. You are sure to love the hike today as you walk along and cross several streams. Markha village is a true oasis in the middle of the cold and arid landscape of Ladakh. There are about 25-30 houses, a deserted palace, and plenty of green fields, poplar and willow trees. You camp by a beautiful stream.

    Day 6: Markha - Thochuntse

    Today's trek covers another stage of moderate hiking with pleasant views all around. There are several interesting stream and river crossings en route. The highlight of the day is the views of the impressive Kangyatze peak (6400 m) when walking towards Hankar. You also cross a few settlements and grazing grounds today. There are plenty of good camping sites and the group selects one to spend the night.

    Day 7: Thochuntse - Nimaling

    It's a short walk today to reach the campsite at Nimaling. Nimaling is a vast open valley with unending grazing grounds and the Kangyatze peak in the background. Almost always, there is constant wind blowing in this region which makes conditions slightly more challenging for trekkers. You can also do a hike to towards the base camp of Kangyatze today.

    Day 8: Nimaling - Kongmaru la - Sumdo - Leh

    Today is a long day, and after an early breakfast, you set out on a steep climb to reach the top of the highest pass on the trail - Kongmaru La. From the pass you can see Nun Kun in the west and Saser Kangri to the north. This is the best part of the trek, where you spend some time at the pass soaking in and capturing the fabulous views all around. You then begin descending to Sukarmo, from where it’s a flat walk along the river to reach the road head at Sumdo. Here you board the waiting vehicles and drive back to Leh. Overnight at the guesthouse/hotel.

    Day 9: Departure from Leh

    Participants wake up early and depart from Leh. Trip ends here.
