  • Trip introduction

    Imagine a crystal clear lake nestled amidst snow-peaked mountains. Ruinsara Tal or lake is just that- a glittering jewel with a breathtaking backdrop!

    Walking through forests and fields, apple orchards and orchid meadows, trekkers traverse lakes and scenic villages on this trip to get the true taste of life in the mountains.

    This 8 day trip goes from Dehradun all the way to Govind National Park on a trek of a lifetime where you explore glaciers and peaks as well as forests and meadows.

    Govind National Park is famous for its wild flowers and you get to see some of the most exotic species of orchids as well as explore the Banderpoonch Range, located at a dizzying 6300m that is a challenging yet fulfilling experience.

    Destination

    Located at the foot of Mt. Kalanag in Govind National Park, Ruinsara Tal is considered sacred by locals. The surrounding meadows are a haven for wildflowers, specifically orchids that bloom here in abundance. Local shepherds grazing their sheep, beautiful dense forests, gleaming glaciers all form part of the scenery here.

    The area was made popular by Jack Gibson, a teacher at Doon School in the late 1940s and has since attracted adventurers and nature lovers. The trek follows the course of the Tons river – a tributary of the holy Yamuna – from Netwar village up through Gangad, Seema and Osla.

    Rules on the trip

    Participants must handle the equipment provided to them with care.

    The trip leader's decision is final.

    Participants must respect local culture and should not litter or deface natural structures/monuments.

    Participants opting for additional service of mules must note that weight of 1 bag should not be more than 12 kgs

    Rent for trekking shoes is Rs. 200 per trekking day. The charges once rented will be applicable irrespective of whether the shoes are worn or not during the trek.

    Rent for a walking stick is Rs. 50 per trekking day. The charges once rented are applicable irrespective if the stick is used or not.

    Cancellation policy

    For cancellations made 0-15 days before the start of the Ruinsara Tal trek: No refund. | For cancellations made 15-30 days before the start of the Ruinsara Tal trek: 50% of the trek cost will be refunded. | For cancellations made 30 days or more before the start of the Ruinsara Tal trek: Full refund minus any costs for booking already made by Himalaya Shelter. | No show: No refund. | No refunds will be made for any inclusions unused by the customer.

  • Day 1: Dehradun to Sankri

    The trip begins with an early start from Dehradun by car to drive up to Sankri. The 210 kms drive takes about 08 to 09 hours travelling through Mussoorie, nainbagh, Damta, Naugaon, Purola, Mori and Netwar to reach Sankri which is the last twon connected by bus. The last 22 kms of this drive are not easy as you drive through Govind National Park. However, the rewards are high as you try and spot animals, birds amidst nature. Overnight in guesthouse at Sankri.

    Day 2: Sankri to Taluka/Daatmir

    After fuelling up with a hearty breakfast, participants embark on the first day of the trek, walking alongside the Tons river. . The exhilaration of the first day coupled with nature’s best make this trek an adventurous one as trekkers traverse 15 kms through forest, apple orchards and fields. Small tea shops along the way provide refreshments as well as a chance to interact with locals and understand their culture. The trek which takes approximately 5 hours ends near the village if Taluka or Daatmir where you spend the night.

    Day 3: Taluka/Daatmir to Seema

    Today’s trek takes adventure to a new level as you are accompanied by the Tons river to your left and cross its many streams as it gushes forward on its course. 11 kms is no mean feat but the action packed journey will have you charged on adrenaline. On reaching the village of Seema, you spend the night in tents to catch up on your rest for another day of trekking.

    Day 4: Seema to Roiltia

    Making an early start to the day, you trek through dense forests with giant, leafy trees where the sunlight is hard to come by. You are rewarded at the end of it as you break through the forests to reach a serene camping location known locally as Roiltia or Waterfall Camp. Overnight in tents.

    Day 5: Roiltia to Ruinsara Tal

    Today is the day you reach the pinnacle of the trek. Nothing will prepare you for the beauty that awaits you at the end of this 5 kms tre which you will complete by early afternoon. The rest of the day is yours to discover Ruinsara Tal. Overnight in tents.

    Day 6: Rest day at Ruinsara Tal

    After 4 days, your mind and body need relaxation and that is just what you will do as you explore the area around your campsite and get to connect with nature as you breathe in the fresh and pure mountain air. You can take a walk in the meadows and discover its orchids or you can sit back enjoy a book and a cup of tea amidst the wonderful surroundings, the choice is yours. Overnight in tents.

    Day 7: Ruinsara Tal to Seema

    This is the day when you begin your trek back as you trace your way in reverse order to reach the village of Seema. Overnight in tents.

    Day 8: Seema to Sankri

    From Seema you make your way back to Sankri passing through fruit orchards where you may get a chance to pick fresh fruit, as well as forests and fields of wild flowers. A hot shower and warm bed awaits you at the guesthouse in Sankri as you slowly make your way back towards the city life.

    Day 9: Sankri to Dehradun

    On this final day of the trip, you drive down to Dehradun with your fellow companions as you share your best memories from the trip and exchange photographs that will last a lifetime. You reach Dehradun by late evening and bid farewell. The trip ends here.
