Sara Umga Pass Trek

The Sara Umga Pass trek is one of the most popular treks in Himachal Pradesh for adventure lovers. Although not the easiest, it is by far one of the most rewarding. | Stretched across 8 days, this journey takes you through remote villages in the Tosh Valley, across meadows and rhododendron forests and glacial pathways whilst giving you a panoramic views of the glistening Himalayan peaks. During this trek you’ll get to tread over snow patches, cross rivers and camp in some of the most isolated locations. | Not for the light-hearted – the Sara Umga Pass trek is truly an enticing and enriching journey for those who are up for a challenge in the Himalayas. Not only will test your endurance, but it will expose you some breathtaking views. 

Destination

Situated at an elevation of 15650 feet, the Sara Umga Pass is a high altitude pass that lies within the Himalayan mountains of Himachal Pradesh. | Originally, a trade route that shepherds and locals used, it connects to Kullu Valley to the Spiti Valley. As your journey commences you’ll travel through a diverse variety of landscapes and watch the vegetation transform as you move towards a higher altitude. | Starting from the base camp in Rumsu this trek includes travelling through Tosh Village, Budhaban, Sharam Thach, Shamshi Thach, Kuta Thach and the Sara Umga Base camp before reaching the Sara Umga Pass. You’ll then descend down to Chota Dhara before ending your journey in Manali. | Throughout this trek you’ll be accommodated in camp tents and you’ll be fed healthy veg meals of breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Report at the Rumsu base camp by 08:00 hrs and undergo the registration process. Post registration embark on an acclimatization walk. Once you return to the campsite feast on lunch and in the afternoon undergo a thorough briefing about the trek along with distribution of trekking equipment. At night you'll sleep at the Rumsu base camp in tents.

Your reporting time at the Rumsu base camp is at 08:00 hrs. To reach Rumsu, you can also hire a public taxi from the Patlikuhal bus stop at an additional cost of INR 500-700 for 6-7 travellers. You'll be accommodated in tents at the Rumsu base camp. These tents are equipped with sleeping bags and mattresses.Today's meal package include veg/jain lunch and dinner.

Wake up early and post breakfast, embark on a jeep ride towards Tosh Village. From Tosh village you'll begin your trek towards Budhaban. En route, you'll pass through dense pine forests and beautiful meadows. You'll reach by late afternoon. Overnight in Budhaban.

You'll begin with a jeep ride from the Rumsu Base camp to Tosh Village. From Tosh village your trek towards Budhaban begins. You'll be accompanied by an experienced trek leader and a support staff of cooks, helpers and porters throughout this trek. You'll spend the night in Budhaban in tents equipped with sleeping bags and mattresses. There are separate tents for toilets. Today's meal package includes breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Day 2 Milestone

Rumsu Base Camp

Wake up early and feast on a heavy breakfast. Today's journey takes you to Sharam Thach. Your route includes a scenic trail through meadows, rhododendron forests and scree. You'll also catch sight of the Tichu Glacier along the way. Reach by evening and spend the night in camp tents.

Day 3 Milestone

Budhaban

You'll begin your day early with breakfast and freshening up before making your way to Shamshi Thach. This route includes a steep climb at the start with some patches of snow along the way and ending with the raging Tosh River. You'll descend further towards the Shamshi campsite with lies at the foot of the Tosh Glacier. From your campsite you'll get to see the Kullu Makalu peak. Overnight in tents at Shamshi Thach.

Day 4 Milestone

Sharam Thach

Begin your day early with a filling breakfast before embarking on a trek to Kuta Thach. This journey starts with a climb up the scree and glacial moraines. While it is relatively difficult it does reward you with gorgeous views of surrounding mountains. Kuta Thach is a beautiful meadow that lies below the Sara Umga Pass. You'll reach by evening where you'll set up tents and spend the night.

Day 5 Milestone

Shamshi Thach

Follow the same routine as the previous day and begin your day early with breakfast. Today you'll travel to the Sara Umga Base camp. Your journey will start with a descent to the Tosh Valley followed by a climb through a rocky path leading to the Sara Umga Base camp. It lies just 200 mts below the Sara Umga Pass. You'll spend the night there in camp tents.

Day 6 Milestone

Kuta Thach

You'll start your day extra early today in order to reach the Sara Umga Pass in good weather. You'll wake up at 04:00 hrs and begin your trek by 05:00. The trek towards the pass is steep over snow, but once you reach you'll be rewarded with spectacular views of the Lahaul and Tosh valleys. After a while you'll move towards Putiruni from where you'll descend down to Chota Dhara via the Chandra River. Overnight in Chota Dhara.

On the last day of your trek you'll be driven to Manali after breakfast. Expect to reach by 15:00 hrs. Your trip ends here.

Today's package includes a filling breakfast before you depart for Manali via a non AC jeep. You'll reach by 15:00 hrs. However it is always ideal to keep a buffer of 2 to 3 hours before booking your bus ticket from Manali. Your trip ends here.

Cancellation policy

For cancellations made 15 days or more before departure of the Sara Umga Pass trek: INR 2000 will be deducted. | For cancellations made less than 15 days before departure date of the Sara Umga Pass trek: No refund. | In case of no show: no refund. | Rescheduling the Sara Umga Pass trek is possible for up to 6 months, however you need to inform the operator 15 days prior to departure date. | In case of cancellation of the Sara Umga Pass trek idue to natural calamities (such as rains, landslides, earthquakes etc) no refund is provided. Alternatives may be provided at the time of cancellation. | All refunds will be processed after deducting a transaction fee of INR 200 per person. This fee is charged by The Great Next.

Rules on trip

Participants must adhere to the instructions of the trip leader/guide at all times during the Sara Umga Pass trek. | Consumption of alcoholic beverages/drugs is not permitted during the Sara Umga Pass trek. | Littering or any damage to natural habitats is strictly forbidden during the Sara Umga Pass trek. 

Additional instructions, booking policies, terms and conditions

It is mandatory for all participates to carry an original and photocopy of the government photo identity card (Aadhar card), a medical certificate (signed by a registered MBBS doctor) and the NOC form (printed and signed by the participant). | Transport from Patlikuhal to the Rumsu base camp can be provided at INR 700 for a Sumo or INR 500 for a small car. | Any additional expenses that occur due to unforseen circumstances during the Sara Umga Pass trek have to be borne by the participant. | The operator cannot be held responsible for any loss, damage, accident or death that occurs during the Sara Umga Pass trek.
