Trekking in Dharamshala

Treks around Dharamshala: Triund Trek

One of the main attractions of Dharamshala is a grassy green hill called Triund hill. It is considered a jewel in the crown of Dharamshala, and Triund is a very popular picnic spot. It is a one-day and one of the easy treks in Dharamshala and a perfect weekend getaway. The trail is rocky and cut into steps at some places.

From Galu Devi temple there is a little path which goes through dense rhododendron and oak and deodar forest to end at the Triund summit, rewarding you with absolutely breath-taking, 180-degree views of the mountains and the gorgeous Kangra valley. Another beautiful trek in Dharamshala is the trek to Bir Billing. Bir Billing has an altitude of 8530 feet and is surrounded by beautiful tea gardens. Treks around Dharamshala: Kareri Lake

For the uninitiated, there is the Kareri Lake trek which is one of the best treks around Dharamshala. Situated at an altitude of 10,500 ft, Kareri Lake is fed by the melting snow from the Dhauladhar Mountains. It's a good trek in Dharamshala for fit beginners, because it is mostly easy, but has some steep sections.

The trail takes you through alpine forests, over sparkling streams, and up to the lake, where you'll camp at the base of two passes, with views of mountains all around.

Day 1 of the trek to Triund: McLeodGanj to Triund

Triund is one of the most popular spots for trekking in Dharamshala. The base for the trek is the town of McleodGanj. You will reach the campsite by 09:30 hrs. After a short briefing, you will start your trek to Triund. The trail is stunning and offers panoramic views of the picturesque mountains around.

The views are so attractive that you can’t help but admire the beauty and click pictures. You can grab a bit or sip on some hot beverage at the many cafes that you will come across on your trek. By afternoon you will reach the summit.

You can rest, explore the place or simply admire the beauty around. You will spend your night under the starry sky on a stunning mountain

Day 2 of the trek to Triund: Triund to McLeod Ganj

You will wake up to the chirping of birds and serene morning. After you freshen up, you will start your return trek to the campsite. You will reach Mcleodganj by afternoon. Your trek ends here.

Day 1: Mcleodganj to Triund

To trek to the Indrahar Pass, you will begin from McleodGanj. You will have to reach the McleodGanj campsite at 09:00 hrs. From here you will begin your trek to Triund. On the way, you will witness dense deodar and oak forests and get a good view of the Kangra Valley.

The route to Triund is simply magical and you can’t help but click pictures of the trail. You will halt at the Galu Devi Temple. You will reach the Triund Campsite by late afternoon and can spend as much time admiring the Dhauladhar mountain ranges and basking in the sheer beauty of Triund. You will stay in tents at Triund.

Day 2: Triund to Laka Got

The next day you will resume your trek to Lake Got. The trail to this lake is a bit challenging and will take you approximately 5-hrs to get there. You can cross dense forests, witness snow-capped mountains and reach Lake Got by late afternoon. The Lake Got campsite is beautiful as well as interesting as it is near a small glacier.

You will witness small patches of snow and since this campsite is frequented by locals you will also get a chance to interact with them and understand their lifestyle. You will stay here in tents overnight.

Day 3: Day trek to Indrahar Pass

The day to trek to Indrahar Pass has finally arrived! Today. You will experience a stunning route as you make your way to the Indrahar Pass. If you’re trekking in the winters you will walk in deep snow with appropriate trekking equipment. It might sound a bit challenging but is also an experience that no trekker would want to miss. Once you reach Indrahar Pass you can indulge in the gorgeous views of the Pir Panjal. You will then retrace your steps back to Lake Got for an overnight stay

Day 4: Laka Got to McLeod Ganj

You will begin your trek back to the Mcleodganj campsite. You will reach the campsite later afternoon and your exciting trek ends. Here.

Day 1 of the trek to Kareri Lake: Kareri to Rioti

You have to reach Kareri village, which is the base camp for Kareri Lake, by 09:00 hrs. This one is an easy and fun trail as you make your way to Rioti. There is plenty to explore on this trail such as small villages, dense forests and lush green patches.

You will walk along natural river streams, cross bridges and reach Rioti by evening. You can explore the place, rest and retire to your tents for a good night’s sleep.

Day 2 of the trek to Kareri Lake: Rioti to the Kareri Lake

The next day you will walk an exciting and gorgeous trail to Kareri Lake. It’s an uphill climb with a few rocky tracks. The views get better with every passing step. Once you reach Kareri Lake you can admire the stunning meadows and the towering Dhauladar ranges. You will set your tents and camp at Kareri Lake.

Day 3 of the trek to Kareri Lake: Kareri Lake to Kareri village

This is the last day of your trek. You will trek back to Kareri village, pass the campsite at Rioti and descend to Kareri Village by evening. And, your trip comes to an end.

By Road: Dharamshala is well-connected with all the major cities of North India, including Delhi, Chandigarh, Dehradun, etc. with state transport buses and plenty of private Volvos plying on the route. Plenty of private taxis and shared taxis are also a great option to reach Dharamshala from Delhi or Chandigarh.

By Railways: Pathankot Railway Station is the closest railway station, which is 84.5 km from Dharamshala. From here you could take public transport or shared taxis

By Air: Gaggal Airport, commonly known as Kangra Airport, is the closest runway to Dharamshala. From the airport, cabs and buses are easily available. This would be the best way to travel for those coming from further away from North India and other parts.

Trekking here in Dharamshala means trekking on the mountains of the mighty Himalayas. The weather is of high altitude mountains and the terrain varies greatly as you get higher. Therefore, what you wear matters a lot and one must dress appropriately to ensure you are safe, protected and have an enjoyable experience.

It is best to wear clothing that keeps you warm and protects you from any harsh terrain or rocks. Dress in layers, wear thermal underwear, warm t-shirts, trekking pants over thermal inner pants, warm and thick fleece and woollen sweaters. Wear and carry both regular and woollen socks for the temperatures get chilly at night.

Cover your head with a sun cap during the day, woollen gloves, muffler, neck warmers to cover your neck. Wear comfortable trekking shoes, and carry lightweight floater. Do not forget to carry a raincoat/poncho as the rains can be unpredictable here.

A 50-60 litre rucksack, cotton clothes, warm jacket, leather jacket, fleece jacket, thermal wear, a woollen cap that covers your head and ears, UV rays protected sunglasses, raincoat, extra pair of socks, water bottle, torch, cold cream, sunscreen, personal toiletries, trekking pole/walking stick. Please carry any personal medication you might need.

Dharamshala has a host of trekking spots suitable for people of various fitness levels. Check the trekking spot details to understand the elevation and the trail. There are treks that are suitable for families, young children, and beginners to introduce them to high altitude treks. There are also great beginner’s snow trek during the winter.

However, whether they are easy or tough treks, you must have a decent level of fitness. You should be able to walk at least 6 to 8 km every day and be able to carry a 15kg backpack for adults. Try to have regular walks or runs in the weeks before the trek and practice climbing stairs or slopes around you for at least 15 min. This will make the whole experience a lot more enjoyable. Especially, when the terrain gets a bit more challenging during winter when it gets covered in snow.
