The Marahni Trek

This 5 day trek through the interiors of the Great Himalayan National Park takes you to Marahni Peak, from where you'll get 360-degree views of the entire Tirthan valley and the peaks around. You'll trek through glorious landscapes, conquer the peak, and then trek down to the Tirthan river, where you'll set up camp for one night.

You'll be camping in fun tunnel tents with two 'rooms' and an enclosed porch area to store your luggage. Every day, you'll eat delicious meals, enjoy merry campfires and chilly evenings, and sleep in spacious tents with comfy air mattresses and soft sleeping bags.

IMPORTANT: This is not a fixed departure so a minimum of 4 travellers is required to book this trip.

Destination

At an astounding height of 12,040 feet, the Marahni Peak is located inside the Great Himalayan National Park in Himachal Pradesh. You'll see tiny villages that still live a simple life, camp beside rivers and in green meadows, and spend 4 days in the midst of glorious nature. You'll have to negotiate some steep inclines and rocky ridges, but the views of the entire Tirthan Valley from Ookhal meadow make it entirely worthwhile.

The Great Himalayan National Park (GHNP) is a World Heritage Site, and one of India's national parks. It covers over 700 sq kms and has a buffer eco zone of about 200 sq kms. It is filled with breathtaking landscapes, plants and herbs that are used in ayurveda, and beautiful flora and fauna. Trekking through the GHNP takes you past quaint villages, gently rolling slopes, craggy peaks, and sparkling rivers. It's the perfect getaway for trekkers and nature lovers looking to get lost in the mountains.

You'll meet up at Pekhri at around 08:00 hrs in the morning. From here, you'll begin your walk towards Lakcha, a quaint Himalayan village en route to your campsite. There are a few patches that are a bit steep, but just enough to warm up those trekking muscles. You'll stop for a packed lunch, and continue onwards to Rangthar. Here there's a flat ridge with views of the mountains around and the Tirthan Valley below. You'll enjoy a bonfire and a delicious hot dinner, and then retire to your tents for the night.

Your first night of camping is at Rangthar. You'll be provided with tunnel-shaped tents with two rooms and a porch to store equipment, as well as clean sleeping bags with liners, pillows, and an air mattress. Today's package includes a delicious packed lunch of parathas, juice, sweets, and a fruit. For snacks enjoy tea, coffee and soup. For dinner, you'll be given one veg and one non veg item, apart from dal, rice, salad, roti and paneer.

Day 1 Milestone

Wake up early to witness the beautiful sunrise over the peaks in the Great Himalayan National Park. After a wholesome breakfast, you'll begin your second day of trekking. You'll climb up a steep trail to Kundri, through golden oak forests, getting closer to the mountains as you climb. If possible, you'll continue onwards to Marahni meadow, from where you'll be able to watch a vivid sunset turning the peaks crimson. Enjoy a bonfire and a hot dinner before bedtime. Overnight in tents.

Spend your night in Kundri in your cozy two room tent. Today's package includes a grand breakfast consisting of eggs, cereals, bread butter and jam. Your lunch will once again be packed, followed by evening snacks and concluding in a rich Indian dinner and dessert. All meals henceforth will be in veg.

Day 2 Milestone

Rangthar

Kundri/Marahni Meadow

From your campsite, you'll hike up to Marahni peak. From the height of 12,040 feet high, you'll be able to see the entire Tirthan valley and the surrounding snow-capped mountains on one side, while the lower green Himalayas and the plains of Punjab lie on the other side. In the afternoon, you'll embark on a small wildlife spotting adventure, where you'll see species of eagles, vultures, wild goats, and hopefully even the Himalayan black bear amongst many rare animals. You'll return to the Kundri/Marahni Meadows campsite tonight. Overnight in tents.

Spend your night in Kundri. Today's package includes a vegetarian breakfast, followed by a packed lunch and proceeded with evening tea and soup. Once again, you'll enjoy a veg rich traditional Indian cuisine for dinner that concludes with dessert.

Day 3 Milestone

You'll eat a hearty breakfast and say goodbye to the Marahni Peak. The trek for the day is mostly a descent route, and you'll be passing many small villages and meeting locals. You'll stop en route for a packed lunch, and carry on down to the banks of the Tirthan river. After a long day of trekking, you'll be able to pull off your shoes and socks and dip your feet in the cool water. You'll be camping here for the night, and enjoying an evening with the sound of the river beside you and a bonfire. It's the perfect way to spend your last night of camping for this trek.

Spend your night by the Tirthan River, with majestic river views right outside your tent. Today's package includes a filling breakfast, followed by a veg packed lunch, followed by evening tea and soup. For dinner, enjoy the usual traditional meal ending in a delicious lip smacking dessert.

Day 4 Milestone

Tirthan River

It's your last day of trekking, and you can relax and have a lazy morning by the river. You'll spend the morning paddling in the river, taking photographs, or just enjoying being out in the open. After eating lunch, you'll set off for a short two hour trek to Gushaini. Your trip ends in Gushaini, leaving you free to proceed homewards.

Your trip ends by evening.

Today being your last day, you'll have a relaxed morning at camp, and will have time to explore the riverside. You'll be given breakfast and lunch, and will begin the return trek to Gushaini after that. Trip ends in Gushaini.

Cancellation policy

For all cancellations of the Marahni trek: You will receive a refund of the trip cost minus any non-refundable amounts already spent on hotels, staff, food, transport, administration fees, and taxes.

No show: No refund.

Rules on trip

Participants must adhere to the instructions of the team leader.

Smoking, consumption of alcohol, narcotic drugs etc. is strictly prohibited during the trek.

While on the Marahni trek, participants must follow a proper waste disposal system.

Additional instructions, booking policies, terms and conditions

The operator and its representatives/subcontractors are released from any liability or claim with respect to any bodily injury, personal injury, illness, death, property loss, or property damage that may result from the trekking activity. A release of liability form will have to be signed by you at your arrival.

Standing height tents, camping tables and dining tents can be arranged at extra cost with prior notice.
