10-day Spiti Valley Homestay Trek

The Spiti homestay trek is a 10-day adventure in the desolate mountains of Spiti with 4 days of trekking in the valley's barren hills. As you walk on relatively unexplored trails, you'll encounter vantage points that overlook dramatic views of Spiti's sky-high mountains. Trekking across sprawling farmlands, you'll visit remote villages, where you'll stay in cosy homestays and experience Spitian hospitality. You'll also drive on some of the highest motorable roads in the world, travel to the famed monasteries of Spiti and explore local tradition and art through the eyes of an insider.

Destination

Spiti Valley, a collection of mountains that reach breathtaking heights in northern Himachal Pradesh, connects the two areas of Lahaul and Tibet. Home to snow-capped peaks like Kanamo and Gya, the valley offers some of the most terrific views of the mighty Himalayas. Spiti is also home to some of the world's highest villages tucked away in the folds of these mountains, such as the village of Komic at over 14,600 feet. On this Spiti homestay trek, you'll get to visit such remote villages and travel to 1,000-year old monasteries. All throughout, astonishing views of the grey and brown landscape decorate your days.

Today, a 10-hr drive takes you to Kaza via the Rohtang and Kunzum Pass. En route, you'll see the drastic change in terrain as you cross the tree line and drive into the barren rocks and hills of Spiti. At Kaza, you will check in at the homestay. Overnight in a homestay at Kaza.

Travel from Manali to Kaza. Today's meal package includes breakfast, lunch and dinner. Breakfast will be served to you at the hotel before you head out for your trip. Today, you will take a day trip visit to Key and Kibber. At Key, you'll visit the ancient Key Monastery, an important hilltop house of worship for Buddhism. From there, you will head to one of the highest motorable villages in the world, Kibber. The village has often seen sightings of the rare Snow Leopard and the SIberian Ibex. Return to Kaza by early evening. Overnight in a homestay at Kaza.

Go on a day trip to visit Key and Kibber. Today's meal package includes breakfast, lunch and dinner. You will begin your day early after a quick breakfast. Packed lunch will be served to you at the banks of the river. You will go to visit Key and Kibber and return to your homestay in Kaza by late evening. Dinner will be served to you at the homestay.

Wake up to the first day of your trek. You will begin with a short drive to Langza, the fossil village of India, where you can try your luck and hunt for fossils. From Langza, you will trek to Hikkim, where you can send a postcard to your loved ones back home from the highest post office in the world. Resume trekking and reach Komic by late afternoon. Overnight in a homestay at Komic.

Travel from Kaza to Langza and trek from Langza to Komic. Today's meal package includes breakfast, lunch and dinner. You will be served an early breakfast after which you will leave for Komic. You will reach your homestay in Komic by afternoon. Lunch and dinner will be served to you at the homestay.

A 6-hr trek from Komic takes you to Demul, a village famous for small handicrafts made by the local natives. En route, you will reach the highest point of the trek at 15,420 feet. It is a long and tiring trek but you will be rewarded with some of the best views of the valley. Overnight in a homestay at Demul.

Trek from Langza to Komic via Demul. Today's meal package includes breakfast, lunch and dinner. You will begin your trek to Demul after having an early breakfast. Packed lunch will be served to you on the trek. You will reach your homestay in Demul by late afternoon. Dinner will be served to you at the homestay.

A short 4-hr trek from Demul leads you to Lahlung. The moderately-difficult trail leads you through sprawling farmlands around Demul to photogenic view points. En route, you will stop to visit the Sharkhang Monastery. Overnight in a homestay at Lahlung.

You will drive to Kaza today, via Dhankar and Tabo. At Tabo, you will visit the 1,000-year old Tobo Monastery, decorated with murals and paintains. A short hike takes you to the ancient caves where monks used to meditate. At Dhankar, you will visit the clifftop monastery and trek to the Dhankar Lake, 45-min hike from the village. Overnight in a homestay at Kaza.

Travel from Lhalung to Kaza. Today's meal package includes breakfast, lunch and dinner. You will have a breakfast early and begin your drive back to Kaza. You'll stop for lunch at either Dhankar or Tabo. You will reach your homestay in Kaza by afternoon. Dinner will be served to you at the homestay.

Today, you will begin your day with a 4-hr drive to Kunzum Pass. From here, you will go on a short trek to the famous high-altitude Chandrataal Lake. You will spend the night in Swiss tents pitched near the lake. Overnight in dome tents at Chandrataal Lake.

Today's meal package includes breakfast, lunch and dinner. You will begin your day with a nice breakfast after which you will head out for Chandrataal Lake. Lunch will either be served after reaching the Chandrataal campsite or during the trek. Dinner will be served at the campsite. You'll stay in dome tents near the lake.

Today, you will begin your drive back to Manali. You will go via the popular Rohtang Pass and reach Manali by late afternoon. Spend the rest of your day at leisure. At night, you will have a small get together over dinner with the your fellow travellers to celebrate the end of your Spiti homestay trek. Overnight in a hotel at Manali.

Cancellation policy

For cancellations made more than 45 days before departure of the Spiti homestay trek: 90% refund.

For cancellations made between 16-45 days before departure of the Spiti homestay trek: 80% refund.

For cancellations made between 8-15 days before departure of the Spiti homestay trek: 75% refund.

For cancellations made between 4-7 days before departure of the Spiti homestay trek: 50% refund.

For cancellations made less than 4 days before departure of the Spiti homestay trek: no refund.

In case of show: no refund.

All refunds will be processed after deducting a transaction fee of INR 200 per person. This fee is charged by The Great Next.

Rules on trip

Travellers are required to follow all instructions of the trek leader during the Spiti homestay trek.

Consumption of alcohol and drugs is strictly prohibited during the trek. Travellers suspected of intoxication will not be allowed to participate in the trek.

Travellers are requested to treat the local culture with respect and avoid littering, defacing property and monuments and causing general disturbance.

Spiti Valley is located at an altitude with low internet connectivity and moderate road access/availability of services. Travellers are advised to take such circumstances under consideration before booking this Spiti homestay trek.

The tour operator takes utmost care to ensure safety of the travellers and shall not be held responsible for any mishap or accident during the Spiti homestay trek.

The tour operator reserves the right to change or cancel the itinerary of this trip due to bad weather conditions or other unforeseen circumstances to ensure maximum safety of travellers and staff. Additional costs arising from such a change in the itinerary will be borne by the traveller.

The tour operator requires a minimum of 4 confirmed travellers to run this trek to Spiti Valley. In the event that there are less than four travellers, the trip can still be operated with a revised costing.
