Although trekking and camping in remote locations is great fun, absorbing the unique cultures of remote villages has a charm of its own. There is no better way to experience the culture of a place than to walk the trails between the villages and live with the locals. On this trip, you will not only get an enriching experience but also get to enjoy the Spitian hospitality. The trip involves both walking at high altitudes and the comfort of sleeping at a cozy village home. You will get to see ancient mummies, monasteries, prehistoric fossils and some of the highest villages in the world, including Chitkul which is the last village of India.

Please note that the minimum group size required to book this trip is 6 people.

Destination

Spiti Valley is located in the northern part of Himachal Pradesh, connecting the neighbouring valleys of Lahaul and Tibet. It is home to many monasteries, some of the highest villages in the world and some spectacularly tall mountains. This trip takes you into the heart of the Spiti Valley and lets you experience all of it. You will hike to high altitudes, spend nights in villages with terrific views of the snow capped mountains all around, and see some of the most unique landscapes.

You begin your trip at Shimla, from where you will be driven to Narkanda in a private shared vehicle. It is a 65 kms drive. Narkanda is located at an elevation of 11,155 feet, and is a great stop for the first night. You will find green orchards all around the place. Overnight in homestay at Narkanda.

The real Himalayan experience begins today as you make an early start from Narkanda for Sangla Valley. You will be driven through mountain roads with deep valley on one side and mountain slopes on the other. You will pass by the Karcham-Wangtoo dam too and climb up to Chitkul which is the last village of India. It is a 180 kms drive which will take you 8 hours to reach Sangla which is located at an elevation of 8,858 feet. Overnight in homestay at Sangla.

Today, you will get the first views of Spiti as you make your way for Tabo, elevation: 10,761 feet. It is a 200 kms drive, which will take around 8 hours. You will get your first glimpse of the barren brown mountains. Tabo is home to one of the oldest monasteries in the region which was built in 994 A.D. Overnight in homestay at Tabo.

You begin your day with a short 30 kms drive to Dhankar, from where you begin your 9 kms trek to Lallung. Dhankar is located quite high, at an altitude of 12,467 feet from where you will begin your trek. You will see the confluence of Pin and Spiti rivers from that height. You will also see the 1000-year-old monastery in Dhankar. It will be an easy trek to Lallung which will take you around 5 hours. Lallung is relatively lower, at an altitude of 11,975 feet. Today, you will begin your trek to Demul in the morning and then drive to Langza from there. Demul is one of the high villages of Spiti at 14,173 feet, so the trek will be slow. It is a vantage point for some great views of the Himalayas. After a short break, you will begin your drive to Langza, which is called the fossil village. It is located at an altitude of 13,779 feet. Today is the second trekking day, so the meal package includes breakfast, lunch and dinner. Breakfast will be served at Lullung, packed lunch on the trek and dinner will be served at Langza.

Today, you will begin your trek to Komic through Hikkim. It is a 9 kms trek which should take you around 4 hours to complete. You can even send a postcard to yourself or your loved ones from the world's highest post office at Hikkim, located at an altitude of 14,400 feet. You will then visit the world renowned Ki Monastery, at an altitude of 13,615 feet. Your final destination is the high altitude villages of Kibber and Chicham, 14,000 feet, home to the endangered snow leopards. Overnight in homestay at Chicham.

Today will be an easy going day, you will trek to an ancient cave atop a hill next to Chicham. It is a hidden gem in Spiti Valley.It has some ancient art on its wall which is a sight to behold. It will be an 8 km trek, should take you 6 hours to complete. Overnight in homestay at Chicham.

Today, you will begin your drive to Manali via Chandra Tal which is an enchanting high altitude lake at an elevation of 13,944 feet. You will also cross the famous Kunzum La (15,059 feet) and Rohtang Pass (13,058 feet). It will be a 180 kms drive which will take 11 hours. Overnight in hotel at Manali.

Cancellation policy

For cancellations made 90 days or more before departure of the Spiti Valley homestay trek: 90% refund.

For cancellations made between 60-89 days before departure of the Spiti Valley homestay trek: 75% refund.

For cancellations made between 30-59 days before departure of the Spiti Valley homestay trek: 25% refund.

For cancellations made less than 30 days before departure of the Spiti Valley homestay trek: no refund.

In case of no show: no refund.

All refunds will be processed after deducting a transaction fee of INR 200 per person. This fee is charged by The Great Next.

Rules on trip

Travellers must follow all instructions of the trek leader during the Spiti Valley homestay trek.

Travellers are requested to treat the local culture with respect and avoid littering, defacing property and monuments and causing general disturbance.

Consumption of alcohol and drugs is strictly prohibited during the Spiti Valley homestay trek.

The tour operator takes utmost care to ensure the maximum safety of travellers and will not be held responsible for any accident, mishap or loss of life or property during the Spiti Valley homestay trek.

The tour operator reserves the right to alter or cancel the itinerary of the Spiti Valley homestay trek due to any unforeseen circumstances such as bad weather or natural calamities. Travellers will be required to bear any costs arising due to such a change in the itinerary.
