    Ever seen a crater before? Created when a meteor struck the earth more than 50,000 years ago, Lonar Crater Lake is the only known hyper-velocity crater in basaltic rock in the world. Accessible by an easy trail, this trek to the Lonar Lake takes you to one of the most spectacular phenomena of nature where the water is thriving micro-organisms that are unique to this area.

    The asteroid or comet that created the lake is believed to lie under the lake. It is also said that compasses don't work in some areas around the lake. The unique features of the salt-water lake and surrounding region attract different species of resident and migratory birds, and is a must-do for any nature-lover.


    The centuries old Lonar Lake is located few hours away from Jalna, in the Buldhana district of Maharashtra. The lake lies like a blue-green gem amidst the lush greenery all around. Your trek to Lonar Lake is an easy circuit trail that takes you to all the most interesting points, as well as to some of the ancient ruins of temples that stand along the crater.

  • Day 1 of the trek to Lonar Lake: Jalna to Lonar Lake

    Meet up with your group at Jalna railway station at 05:00 hrs. You'll be taken to Lonar in private transport, stopping en route for a cup of tea. Once you check in to your hotel in Lonar, you can freshen up and grab breakfast, and then attend the briefing, ice-breaking session, and most importantly, the special session with Mr. Bugdane, author and Lonar Crater expert. After lunch, you set out for your trek. The 4-hour trek takes you around the crater, to the lake, and to a number of temples nearby. Refreshments, discussions and dinner at your hotel. Overnight at Lonar in hotel.

    You will spend the night in dorms at an MTDC resort or Hotel Krushna in Lonar.
