Fergusson College is a well-known landmark in Pune and can be easily reached by road.
Around 52,000 years ago, a big meteor fell from space and landed close to the town of Lonar, creating a huge crater in the ground. Over the years the crater has been filled with rainwater and has become a lake. It is interesting not only because it is the largest meteor crater in south east Asia, but also because of the unique natural mysteries around it. The lake water is both salty and sweet; there are certain species of micro-organisms found only here; and it is said that magnetic devices like compasses do not work around here.
Lonar Lake has an average diameter of 1.2 kms and an average depth of 150 metres. It is a saline and alkaline lake, with a ring of large trees ringing it. The unique natural composition here means it attracts all kinds of rare birds and wildlife.
