Mahuli Fort, with easy access and proximity to Mumbai, is a popular trekking destination for travellers from Mumbai. The fort itself, the highest point in the Thane district, dates back to the 14th century, even as most of the fortifications now lay in ruins. The forest surrounding the fort, declared a sanctuary, is dense and overgrown with monsoon-fed river streams running down from the fort. The mountains, atop which the fort resides at 2,800 feet, are a group of more than two peaks with a complex of plateaus and pinnacles.
