Considered as one of the most sacred temples in Himachal Pradesh, the trek to Bijli Mahadev is not just enchanting, but immensely fulfilling too. You'll be climbing a steep trail through oak and deodar forests, to a cliff that stands at about 8000 feet, overlooking the entire Kullu valley. Surrounded by lush green trees, the temple has a clear blue lake nearby, as well as views of large pastures and wild horses. The trek is steep in some sections, but it only takes 2 hours, and the views are worth it.
Located at an altitude of 8070 feet, the Bijli Mahadev temple is found 22 kms from the Kullu Valley of Himachal Pradesh, across the magnificent river of Beas. The temple is considered very sacred by locals, and houses an ancient 'Shivalingam' inside. Outside the temple, there's a shiny 60-feet high staff that conducts lightning during rainstorms. Every time lightning strikes, it is considered to be divine blessings, and the 'shivalingam' statue is shattered. The priest of the temple has to put it back together using butter and sattu (flour) each time.
