There's a spectacular photo opp just waiting for you on this trek! Stand on the Sandakphu ridge, with one foot in Nepal and one in India, and you're in two countries at the same time. But that's not the best part of the trek. In the Sandakphu Phalut trek, you'll trek to the highest ridge in West Bengal, explore dense oak and rhododendron forests, walk through alpine meadows, and see some of the highest peaks in the Himalayas.
This trek involves long hours of trekking on most days, and quite a tough day when you ascend to Phalut, so you should be prepared for that. It is a tea-house style trek, which means you will not stay in tents, but in simple rest houses run by local families. These tea-houses are rustic and charming, but will not have attached washrooms or running hot water.
Sandakphu at 11,941 feet is the highest point in West Bengal, followed by Phalut, a table top at 11,800 feet. This trek takes you along the Singalila ridge that runs down from the Kanchendzonga massif, and through some gorgeous landscapes. You'll be walking through exotic bamboo forests and rhododendron forests, where a variety of rare Himalayan like the clouded leopard, red panda and yellow-throated marten live.
Get glimpses of Mount Everest, Mount Makalu, and Mount Lhotse. | Trek throug the lush woodlands of India and Nepal on the Sandakphu Phalut trek. | Stand on the border of India and Nepal, with one foot in each country. | Witness gorgeous sunrises and dramatic sunsets over the highest peaks in the Himalayas.
You will be picked up from the NJP Railway Station at 10:00 hours and driven to Maneybhanjang. It is a thrilling drive towards the end with multiple hairpin bends before reaching the charming village of Chitrey. You'll get there by early evening, and can spend the rest of the evening resting or exploring this small hamlet. You'll be able to see scenic views of Darjeeling city, which looks like a small sprinkle of lights in the night. Overnight stay in lodge.
You will be accommodated in Chitrey in a clean and comfortable dormitory-style lodge on triple/multi sharing basis with a basic bed and linens to keep you warm.
