This trek to Singalila Pass and Phoktey Dara takes you deep into the forests of Sikkim, where you'll see many strange and wonderful things. This region has a mix of alpine and temperate forests, and the thick vegetation makes it a favourite for birds and butterflies.
On this trek, you'll be hiking through the Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary, and climbing to Singalila Pass, which lies at an elevation of about 11,800 feet. You'll head from there to the top of Phoktey Dara, which gives you spectacular views of four out of the five highest peaks in the Himalayas. You'll be able to see Mount Everest, as well as Kanchendzonga peak, Makalu and Lhotse, each one a legend in itself!
Do note that this trek takes you into a sanctuary, so you'll see little to no civilization during your 6 days here.
The Singalila Ridge separates the mountains of West Bengal from the other ranges of the Himalayas. The whole ridge falls under the Singalila National Park, and is full of gorgeous biodiversity. The two highest mountains of West Bengal are Sandakphu and Phalut, and both are located on this ridge. Thanks to their elevation, anyone who stands atop can see spectacular views of the peak of Kanchenjunga and Mount Everest.
There are two seasons for the Singalila Pass trek: mid-March to mid-May, and mid-October to mid-January. If you go between March and May, it's warmer, and you'll be able to see the flowering rhododendron blossoms, dotting the landscape with vibrant pink. During this time, it's usually cloudy and misty, but you should be able to get some clear skies and unobstructed views early in the morning. If you go between October and January, the weather is colder, but the skies are clear and you'll be able to see far into the horizon.
