This Dzongri Goecha La trek takes you into the magical landscape of Sikkim, up to high altitude passes, through meadows filled with rare and beautiful wildflowers, and along the banks of crystal lakes and streams.
The first part of this trek has quite a challenging climb to the ridge of Dzongri. You'll be seeing more and more of the snowy peaks of Sikkim and Nepal around you as you ascend. The Kanchenjunga range is the highlight, but you'll also be able to see Kabru, Pandim, Rathong, Kokthang and Siniolchu. After that, the trail flattens a bit as you walk through gorgeous meadows and wide valleys. You'll have another climb as you approach Goecha La, and this involves a bit of fun scrambling over moraine slopes.
This is a challenging trek and is not recommended for beginners.
Nestled inside the Kanchendzonga National Park in West Sikkim, Goecha La is at a dizzying altitude of 16,200 feet. A bustling eco-system, the Kanchendzonga National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is home to hundreds of species of rare birds and butterflies. Between Oct-Jan, the views are very clear (especially in November) and the weather is very cold. As winter advances, there is a good chance of snowfall too. In the spring and summer months between Mar-June, the weather warms up and the flowers blossom. You'll be able to see rhododendron and giant magnolias, but the clouds hang lower, so your views might be obstructed on most days.
